23.0. "Saddleseat Riding" by AIMHI::DANIELS () Mon Apr 06 1992 11:37

    Are there any saddleseat riders out there? What do you enjoy about
    that particular style?

    I *love* the outfit....especially the derby! (:

    	I have shown saddleseat, but not because I like it. It's
    	the `required' style for my breed. It's like riding on a
    	piece of polished cardboard.... =(

    	I managed to compromise and get a sidesaddle/saddleseat
    	suit so I can ride aside in my classes. I like the flashiness
    	of it, to answer your question, but personallyI feel it is
    	the least secure seat to ride at.

    I ride both hunt seat and saddle seat. And I like both for specific
    reasons.

    Riding a good gaited horse to me is as big a kick as riding a good
    hunter. And I like the excitement of showing gaited horses. The
    really good ones tend to be 'on the edge' and enjoy showing off their
    style and ego. And that attitude is catching.

    I really miss my old park horse who used to go around the arena like
    he was the only horse on earth--and I miss the business of the more
    people whooped and hollered and clapped the higher and stronger he would
    go. (The audience participation is fun. And getting to do a victory
    lap is fun--something I miss with showing hunter and jumpers.)

    I have ridden in over fences classes that were a lot less aerobic
    exercise than riding a gaited horse through a class.

    I agree with the last note....I get a big kick out of the motion.

    As far as the saddle goes...you are right Sherry. I cheat a little
    though by using "spoiler" over the saddle. It not only helps with
    the slippage but it helps my back...not as much jarring on the "more
    mature" bones.

    The mare I ride is 16 but you would never know it.  She loves to go;
    she is never out of control. The more you cheer the more motion
    she gets....she really gets me going.
