158.1Horse-crazy Kid WantedMSBCS::A_HARRISFri Aug 30 1991 14:4430

    Hi,

    I'm looking for a kid from the Maynard/Stow area who would like to ride
    in exchange for daily barn work. It has to be someone who already knows
    how to ride and doesn't need supervision.

    I've got two geldings, a 14.1 hand Morgan and a 16 hand Thoroughbred
    cross. Both are ridden hunt seat and are stabled at my home in Stow.
    Since I had my baby in March, I just haven't had the time that these
    guys deserve. They are good, quiet guys. This would be a great
    opportunity for someone who has been taking lessons and LOVES horses,
    but cannot afford to buy or lease a horse.

    If any of you know anyone, have them give me a call. My home number is
    (508) 897-6915.

    (Anyone know who the 4H leaders are in this area? That might be another
    way to find someone.)

    Has anyone else been involved in an arrangement like this? How did it
    work out? What are some of the pitfalls to avoid? What are the chances
    of some one suing if there's any injury?

    Thanks,
    Andrea Harris

Hi,

I am looking for a job working with horses ( even mucking the stables out )
 **** ANYWHERE **** in the world.

I have my AI certificate.
I have worked at a stables abroad, in Italy, during a college vacation, at which
I thoroughly enjoyed.

I have also got a lot of experience caring for other animals.

I have just graduated from college in England with a B.Sc degree in Biology,
during which I undertook a behavioural study of a herd of Przewalski ( wild
Mongolian ) horses at Marwell Zoo, Hampshire, for my final year project.

I am currently based in Devon, England, but I can travel anywhere in the world.
If anybody can help me PLEASE mail me via 'Richard Johnson @ reo'
					   DTN 7830 4183 ( work hours )
or phone me, Isobell, 44 (0)884 33146

Is there is a more appropriate note for looking for work ?

	Looking forward to hearing from anybody...

	Isobell

The Pedlar lists working student positions in 3 dressage barns in the
Lowell - Marlboro MA area.

        working student = work like a slave for no salary.

People I know who have worked at Maplewood in Berlin MA have said it was a
great experience. Exposed to everything that happens at the barn and
working with that level of horses.

Great learning experience with 5 lessons a week and can give you the
experience you need to get a paying job working in the horse industry.

158.4Ha Ha - working student.....BOOVX2::MANDILEI love readin' & ridin'Wed Sep 11 1991 11:1311
    Whenever I see "working-student" ads, I laugh. I was looking
    for such a position years ago, to learn about horses and horse
    care, as I had bought my first horse, and he would be arriving
    in about 9 mths....I answered an ad, and they wanted me to "pay"
    them $300 a month to let me shovel their stalls, get a lesson
    a week...but, here's the ringer- I wasn't allowed to hang around
    unless I was there for a lesson or work. Can't learn much that way,
    in my opinion. Instead, I took a paying weekend job at a
    jumping/hunting stable, and learned that way, and was paid, too...

158.5working student = slave ;-)CARTUN::MISTOVICHWed Sep 11 1991 11:389
    They wanted you to *Pay*! Sheesh!!! My experience as a working
    student has been more a working slave, but I did get paid a small sum
    and daily lessons (for 12 hours work/day). However, I did learn a lot --
    though not always what I was expecting to learn!

    I would do it again, but I will only do it with someone really at the
    *top* of their field, i.e. an international trainer or coach.

158.9Barn help hourly rate?ESCROW::ROBERTSMon Mar 16 1992 08:325
    What's the current hourly rate for barn help in the northwest-of-Boston
    area? I'm currently paying the teenager who works in my barn $6 per
    hour. Is this low? High? Just right?

158.10I value help at $6/hour alsoBROKE::MELINDAMon Mar 16 1992 08:5510
All my barn work is bartered for with working student help. But I
value barn work at $6/hour. Since some kids work faster than others, I work
it out to be $2.00 per stall, and $1.00 for each horse that is fed
(hay/grain/water). Each horse that is tacked up is $6 since nearly an hour
is spent grooming, tacking, untacking, cooling, and cleaning the tack.

A friend of mine is looking for morning work at a barn local to her.
She would like to work 3 (maybe 4) mornings a week. Her goal is to
learn more about care and basic handling of horses. An intense show barn
would not be a good fit for her. She lives in West Townsend. I'll forward
any leads to her.

Thanks
