I recently used a new fly spray which may be causing some problems.  This
note is to ask if any of you have experienced these symptoms this summer
and if you were using this (or this type) of fly spray).

This note is not to cause a discussion of fly sprays.

The spray in question has no real brand name that I can find.  It comes in
a red, rectangular, metal can - holds about one gallon.  The label has in
large letters 'Beef and Cattle' fly spray.  The label indicates that it is
ready to use - as is.  The spray itself is clear and smells like paint
thinner.  It is petroleum based.  It does not mix with water (I tried to
dilute it!)

The symptoms  (for the horse) include shortness of breath or exhibition of
exhaustion (light sweat) earlier than normal, possible 'burping' sounds or
other signs of gas, stomach distentions, general colic signs but with
manure, manure that is loose and may actually look like 'cow piles',
swaying back and forth or leaning against solid objects.

	I've always heard that it's not a good idea to use any cattle preparations on horses. Sounds like the advice was correct. This stuff sounds lethal! I hope you've stopped using it. I'd also call my vet REAL fast if a horse was exhibiting these symptoms. The can the stuff comes in must have the list of ingredients on it; I've never seen a can of any kind of insect repellent or insecticide without a listing of the ingredients. I think it's required by federal law. Did you put this stuff ON your horse, or just spray your barn with it? -ellie

	I agree, if it does not say HORSES on it do not use it. The materials that cattle and other livestock can tolerate are different some times from horses. You can be poisining your animals. Contact your Vet the horses may need some treatment. terry pss....... I have used some Farnan sprays in the past that are labeled for HORSE and STABLE SPRAY. It is to strong for my horses and caused them to get welts were ever the spray landed on the horses skin. Other then that they did not get sick and the welts were gone in about 24 hours.

	re/ 0 i think if you delite it you release some chemical (i dont know) but anyways.. i do know the one you are talking about.. we used it out west (we used it because nothing else worked on the large horse flys , like i have seen recently in n_h :*) ) wendy o'

	The situation is well in hand. The vet is working on the symptoms and the fly spray is one suspect. The barn has aver 15 horses in it, many of them use this spray without these symptoms. But obviously, some horses are more sensitive than others. This note was to see if anyone else has seen these symptoms (with or without this spray) or if anyone is using this spray and not seeing these symptoms. Again, the spray is only one component of the investigation.
