| Hi Naoko,
Just remember that we were all beginners at one time or another. I
personally admire anyone who takes up horseback riding as an adult. I
think it requires a lot more courage than starting as a child.

| Naoko,
Welcome, and don't feel that you are the only beginner. There are many of us in
here who are far from experts. We all learn from each other. It is wonderful
to have a member from Japan. You should be able to lend many interesting
thoughts to all of us.
May I suggest that you consider putting in a note about what it is like to ride
in Japan? I know that I would find that interesting.

| Hi, everyone. I'm very very glad to recive your replies.
I'm a member of the Osaka Riding Association (O.R.A.) near the bay side in
Osaka prefecture. There are about 200 members, 40 horses, a pony, 3 dogs
and a cat. Most horses we ride here are retired race horses; thoroughbreds.
We enjoy English style.
Mary, you said you admire anyone who starts horseback riding as an
adult. I know a woman who has begun horseback riding since she was 60 years
old. She started riding with her granddaughter at the first time. Though
her granddaughter gave up it, she has still continued to ride. She can't
ride so well, but she enjoyed her riding very much and often says
"It is my favorite time to wipe horses faces."
Whenever seeing her riding, I always admire her passion and positive life
style. (I'm just 26 years old...)
I can learn many things through horseback riding, horse persons and horses.
I'd like to tell you about Japanese riding. But now, I don't have
any knowledge about it. I promiss that I'll ask my instructers about horses
in Japan and write them in this notes as soon as possible.
NAOKO
P.S. What are your favorite horses names? I like to know horses names.
They sounds very lovely.
My favorite horses named "WONDER", "BLUEFOREST", "HOWORD", "CAP" etc..

Hello, everyone. Let me introduce myself.
My name is Naoko. I have been working at DEC(Osaka,Japan) for
about one year as a temp. I'm very happy to read this notes
files. I don't have much experiences of horse back riding and
don't really know much about horses. I've just started to learn
horse back riding from last September. I'm really a beginner!!
So, I'm a little ashamed of joining this notes. Everyone is all
exparts for me!!
I usually ride horses twice a week. I'm very jealous
you have many your own horses and wide farm. I don't have own a
horse. As you know, it is very very expencive to have a horse
and to take a horse back riding lesson in Japan.
By the way, I'm going to go New Zealand(Rotorua) to ride
horses by our horse back riding club's tour this August.
I'm very excited!!
If somebody has some advices about riding or horses,
would you give me the advices? You(Everyone) are my teachers!
Thank you for your reading.
NAOKO
P.S. I'm sorry for my poor English.

Hello!
My first horse was a retired race horse - Overdue Bill (Bill for
short).
My favorite horse name goes to the second horse I owned - a
quarterhorse mare named Moccasion. A moccasion is a soft shoe worn by
many North American Indian Tribes. The name really fit her - soft and
tough just like an old moccasion.
Welcome!

| Welcome Naoko! Itwill be interesting to hear about your experiences
with horses in Japan!
I have 2 ex-racehorses, one a Thoroughbred and one a Standardbred
(trotter). The Thoroughbred is a 10 yr old gelding, named Comatose
Kid. Honest. That was his racing name. His sire's name was Unconcious,
and his dam's name was Dizzy. It's terrible. Kind of amusing, though,
I think. It fits, too, he's very quiet! We call him CK. The
Standardbred is Plympton's Pride, which I hate, too. I call her Pony,
Plympy, or X&^%$, depending on how well she is behaving at any given
moment. She rarely behaves, but I love her to death and happily
overlook any and all of her faults. She's named that because she
was born in Plympton, Mass.

| I have two horses, one a reg. quarter horse gelding named
Ranger's Angel (Yuck! Terrible name for a boy horse!) so
names as his sire (dad) was Chip's Texas Ranger and his dam (mom)was
Angela's Choice. They could have named him Ranger's Choice....
My other horse is a grade gelding named Abraham Lincoln.
Abe for short. That name is worse!!!! But, as he is 18 yrs
old, and knows his name WELL, it's not worth changing it.
One rides western, and the other rides english style.

| Hi Naoko
Well you are doing better then alot of us I would say....off on a horse
back riding trip. That is so exciting. I have taken my horses camping
in alot of the state forests but that is nothing like what you are
about to do. Have a GREAT time.
I own APPALOOSA's...these are know to be Indian horses. They were bred
here in the United States by a trib of indians, the Nez Perez
(spelling).
They are a very colorful breed of horse with many differnt coat colors
and patterns.
My appaloosa's are solid black or dark brown with blankets over their
rumps and large spots on the blankets. This is traditational for an
appaloosa, but they also have ones that are leopard..all white with
spots all over, roans, etc.
some of my horses names are: Zebra's Sunrise (sunny for short) she was
born at sunrise, Chief Chantapeta (Rainy for short) his name means
the chief of rain storms, Little-T-Bird...(Squirt for short, he is
small) Little Ravens Dol (dolly for short) Raven if after her mother
meaning little black dol....raven is a black bird. And old Randy
he is a little Shetland pony.
I ride Western. But also huntseat and am now working into some
Dressage where it is so closes to western rideing...( the seat that is)
waiting to here about Japan and riding in your country.

| Naoko-
I am glad you decided to share your experiences with horses
in Japan with the notesfile folks. I find it so interesting
to learn about the cultural differences and how they may apply
to our lifestyle.
I own a black and white Paint mare who is 10 yrs old. She is a real
sweetie. She's rather be with the people than the other horses, like
she helps fixing fences, filling water tubs....
Besides Paints, Icelandic Horses are my favorite. They originated
in Iceland, and are pony sized horses. There is a note somewhere
back a few which describes the breed. I ride my friends several times
a year, and will probably buy one once our farm is completed. They are
gaited, and the 4th gait - the tlte, is a very smooth gait, sorta like
a fast walk. I could ride for days on these kritters. They are
starting to become very popular with the endurance crowd in the united
states because of this gait, and their strength and stamina.
My mare's name is Impressive Jesse, although we just call her Jess.
The icelandics are given names in Icelandic - My favorite gelding is
names Granee - which is Icelandic for gray.
My friends and I go camping several times a year on horseback in
Vermont. We have a great time! I'd love to hear about your trip to
New Zealand (SP?)
Take care-
Michele

1503.15 | RIDING IN N.Z. | OSAV01::T0_SHAMOTO | | Tue Aug 27 1991 01:43 | 35 |
| Hello!!
Thank you for your replies. Though I have to use a dictionary to read
your notes, I enjoy reading them very much. All of you has nice horses
nemed lovely.
Well, let me tell you about my trip to New Zealand. I had stayed "The
Farmhouse" in Rotorua(middle of the north island) for 4 days with my
horseback riding club's members. The Farmhouse is the biggest and
famous for having a lot of horses and breeding them in N.Z.
The owners, Hugh and Janne, have almost 120 horses. Of course, there are
many many sheep, bulls, pigs and lovely 4 dogs. They have several kind
of horses: Arabs, Quorter-horses, Throughbreds, mixed breeds etc..
We could have many beautiful memories there --- wide farm, testy dinner,
KIWI people with warm heart, clear air and water, and, of course, lovely
horses!!
Whenever I close my eyes, I can remember the scenery and experiences with
horses. I'm very sorry not to be able to show you my vision.
We can run faster than we always do in Japan. Riding with seeing flock of
sheep makes my heart calm down and happy.
After riding, we went to Hot Springs to relax our bodies.
We,luckly, could meet a famous horse trainer in N.Z. Her name is DONNA.
(I don't know her last name.) She trained the Olympic Champion horse,
SOUL and L.A., named "CHARISMA".(the rider is Mark Todd)
We could share time to ride together!! My instructor said that she is
really good rider and knows horses very much. When she is riding, she
never pull the reins.
I recomend you to visit there. I'm sure that you can enjoy horseback
riding and have many fun there.
I'm going to write about the cost of riding and horses in Japan next
time.
