1497.0. "Breaks Wind Under Saddle...Why?" by BONJVI::PIERCE (Let's talk dirty in Hawaiian) Thu Aug 01 1991 10:15

This note my seem alittle wierd but here it goes. My stable
mate at my barn has a 7 year old Arab/QH mare. She is a
lovely horse w/ one problem. Every time you give her a
command under saddle she 'breaks wind'. She has been doing
this since she as been with us (1yr).

She seems to do this because she does not like to told what to
do. Once she is in command she is fine, but as soon as you
give her another command she does it again.

We have tryed changing her food. We have tried changing the
	amounts of food.

Is this somthing that young horses do? Will she grow out of it?
Have any of you had this problem.?

	Thanks for any input

	Louisa

When a horse collects to change gait, they tighten the stomach muscles
and any gas will be forced out. I would not be overly concerned about
it, a horse on grass or legume hay will always have some gas in there,
it is normal. I had a pony that would let loose with each step at the
trot, when he was on grass, the kids that rode thought it was funny!

My horse does the same thing - we think of it as his general comment
on life! :-) He's 19 now and going strong - has been doing it all 10
years I've had him so I wouldn't worry about it!
