| Both of mine seem to have a bad case of the "Itchy tail syndrome"
right now. Worse than last year, too.
I just keep washing.....

hot spots as I* know it, is like crusty on the top and yellow junk
just over the skin???
anyway.. HOt spots are supposed* to be caused by too much Protein..
try cutting back on that or switching grains and see if that helps,
along with the idondine baths.

1487.4 | itchy tails | ISLNDS::GARROW | | Fri Jun 21 1991 09:39 | 10 |
| Another itchy tail tale....
I had a mare that suffered from the same fate...seems every summer
her skin above her tail would peel and she would rub and rub and
rub. I had three vets out and it wasn't rain rot, or any other
bacteria, any we just kept washing and when her hair got hard and
sticky I would use bag balm. Seems she liked to soothe the itch on
the pine trees and got all the sap on her!!!!
Good luck

| Hi Terry,
Once you get the open hot spots closed, try using listerine to help
prevent future ones...

1487.6 | she is on low protein/ I will try listerine | LUDWIG::ROCK | | Mon Jun 24 1991 11:30 | 20 |
| The mare is on "Strider" by Blue seal and it is a low protein feed.
My horses have been on it for years and have never had troubles before.
this mare always has the hives once or twice a summer....never the
HOT SPOT she is getting now.
With the ointment we are using....once a new spots starts one night
on the ointment on her tail and the next day the crusty scab is off
and it looks better. I just with there was a way to stop it before
hand.
I will try the listerine. Can I use it straight or do you dilute it
a little?
I can dob it on with cotton balls onto the spots so that it does not
get into the open sores.
Thanks for all the help.

1487.7 | CORN STARCH | NEST::MACDONALD | | Mon Jul 22 1991 17:30 | 5 |
| Try corn starch on the hot spot, I use it on my dog it takes
the itch out. A groomer told me to put alcohol (ouch) on the
spot first then the corn starch. I didn't use the alcohol, but
did put the corn starch on twice a day and in no time it was
gone.

1487.8 | Tincture of Green Soap | CUPMK::JETTE | | Tue Oct 01 1991 12:06 | 10 |
| My Connemara Mare had a hot spot on her tail as long as I owned her.
She was all white with pink skin - so very sensitive especially in the
summer. My vet recommended (and it worked well) that when I bathe her
I use Tincture of Green soap. I got it from my pharmacy in liquid
form. I also used plain old baby lotion or oil on her tail every
morning massaging it in as long as she would tolerate it. This seemed
to keep it under control for years.
