1463.0. "Allergic to Oak Buds" by BONJVI::PIERCE (I'd rather be tanning) Mon Apr 29 1991 12:17

One of the horses at the barn is sick. she is a Arab/Througbread mare
she is 7yrs old. She has been in this barn for 1yr now (last April).
there are 3 horses in total.

The other day she look sad and did not seem her self. We had the vet
up and they thought is was colic. As it turns out she has a form of
heptitis (sp) - she is alergic to oak buds, or something that is
budding in the pasture...she vet thinks it's oak buds becasue alot of
other horses are alergic to them to. And since Shree (the horse) has
been the pasture for the past yr w/no problem..it has to be somthing
    that is budding.

The other horses are just fine. Shree is on 12 pills day and bran and
we have to watch her when she is eating..to make sure she is only eating
    the grass..

Have any of you had a problem w/ this type of problem?

This just reminded me of something which happened in a barn I was at
about 12 years ago- one turn-out paddock was off-limits to the
horses in the spring. Someone said it was due to thetree buds - but
since my horse was never turned out there anyway, I never paid any
attention. Now it makes sens to me.

and she legs are swollen...we just don't know what to do. She is
in so much pain..and for so long...

What does the vet say about this? Have you been keeping
him informed of her (lack of) progress?

It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion or third opinion, if you
    haven't already.

    Hi!

Sorry to hear about the mare!!!

I recently had to deal with heaves with my horse....this condition was
brought on by some sort of allergy.....

I can't recommend enough a phone call to Cornell University in Ithaca,
N.Y.....can't recall the vet I spoke with....she must have been on
the phone for a good 1/2 hour with me....she also sent me some really
informative material on the subject and turned me on to two vets doing
    research at Michigan State.....

These folks at Cornell are really willing to help if they can...which
was NOT the response I got from Tufts when I called there.....

Call them....they will offer their opinion on any treatments that are
available and fill you in on any research....

I question whether it's the "buds" that are causing the problem...
obviously, something needs to change right away to get her condition
under control.....I would not put her out to eat at all but change
her onto I totally different diet (with your vets guidance of course)..

Just as in heaves, you need to do something about controlling the
environment and/or diet....and it sounds like your problem IS the
diet....can you put her in a stall and hay her....or an outside area
that doesn't allow her to eat? Obviously, if it's an allergy, this
    has gotten under control yet.....

My horse has completely recovered from her heaves (with what we can
tell....NO PERMANENT DAMAGE)...as my vet says....he wishes more folks
would not expect for medication to be the answer with these type of
problems....that the environment/feed must be controlled for full
    recovery.....

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROBLEM!!!! But as I said, I wouldn't have her
anywhere near that grazing area if it is suspect....

My mare got real sick Sunday morning while at a show. All four legs
were very swollen, and they were oozing this serum stuff (pinkish and
very sticky). THey were red hot to the touch, and sore to the touch.
She got a patch on her withers and another on her neck. real strange!

My vet came out and felt it was some sort of allergic reaction (contact
dermatitist SP). She didn't think it was systemic (inside her), because she
    appeared very healthy, and sound.

She got steroid shots, and I'm giving her pennicillin and bute for a
few more days. I'm also bathing and wrapping her legs several times
a day. THis serum stuff will make her lose her hair....so I'm trying
    to minimize the damage.

Who is the vet you're using? I'd like to mention this to my vet,
because she dosen't know what caused this? She also heard of another
case, quite similar, happening over the weekend in Ct.

Thanks for the notes. We have had 2 vets up to the barn they boht
thought it was colic. It has been 3weeks now and Shree is still not
better at all..yes the vet is aware of her lack of health and we
have the bill to prove it...but there is nothing they can do...we don't
even know if she is alergic to somthing budding in the pasture..it is
just a guess....every time she goes in the pasuture she comes back all
sick..stomac tucked and head hung low...we keep her in until 12:00 then
let her out and we worked her up to that as it was...we just don't
    know.

1463.8just a suggestion...CARTUN::MISTOVICHThu May 09 1991 17:004
If she is consistently returning from the pasture in worse shape than
when she went out, I'd keep her in.

1463.9ditto .8; blood tests?ASD::MCCROSSANFri May 10 1991 09:536
Along with .8's advice, have the vets run any blood tests on this mare
to check for chemical imbalances (liver/kidneys) or for blood
	infections?

Good luck and hope this mare is okay...

1463.11Shree updateBONJVI::PIERCEI'd rather be tanningWed May 29 1991 14:0310

Shree is all better! As soon as everything was budded she
got better! She also has a reaction to the sulfer medican
she was on..the sulfer made her very tired and not her self

but she is back to normal! Thanks for asking. We will
have to keep her in the barn for a few weeks next year
    	when the everthing is blooming.
