I have a friend who is taking her very sweet horse to a show in Weston. This person's daughter works at a special needs school. They noticed that this show has a special needs class and that it will be judged on the "Danish" system (quotes are theirs). The daughter is positive that she could take some of her students on her mom's horse (I agree). However, none of us know what the "Danish" system is. Anybody out there have any idea? Obviously she plans on doing this so that all the kids can have fun. Anybody have any experience showing with special needs classes? The intentions are good, but if anybody advises against it, please let me know so that I can pass the word along. By the way, the kids have ridden this horse already so we know that they'll be safe. Thanks, Dawn

1455.1 | Everyone gets a blue... | NUTS::BUSHMAN | Tue Apr 23 1991 10:29 | 13
I've either shown or worked at this show for almost 20 years, and I know this particular class. (it's a more recent addition.) There are usually about 5-10 entries and each person does something different. If their handicap means that they are just led around the ring at a walk, with another helper steadying them, then that's all they do. Some can go in and make some simple figures at different gaits all by themselves. But the key is that if the judge feels that every exhibitor did the BEST job they could, then he/she will award each one a blue ribbon ("excellent"). If he feels that any particular exhibitor did a "very good" job, then he can award them a red ribbon. White is for "good". Green for "fair". (I'm a little fuzzy on the lower awards - they usually are never given!)
1455.2 | We used it! | TOTH::ZBROWN | Tue Apr 23 1991 13:46 | 13
*Many* years ago when I was 4-H and our club had shows we used the Danish System alot, mostly in the Walk&Trot classes and lead line. We gave the usual 1st(blue), 2nd(red),3rd(yellow), 4th(white), 5th(pink), 6th(green) and then after we gave a Blue danish to the remanding riders so that all was happy. It really was special for each child, and they *loved* getting a ribbon. Zina |
