I have been riding English all my life. Last year I started to ride
Western, so my husband could ride to (he refuses to ride English).
I've done pretty good so far with one problem.
On the Western girth, what is the buckle for? I've been riding for
a full year and I have never used the buckle and I have never had
a problem....should I use it? or does it matter? and how do you use it?
I tryed when I first got the saddle to I just could not figure it out..
I used to ride Western when I first started to ride, but my
saddle/girth never had a buckle..
If you can shead any light on this, it would be appreciated :-)
Thanks
Louisa & Joey

Well lets see, I'm not really a western rider but I occasionally
will tack my horse up western for a nice change. Anyways, I
*believe* that the girths that do have a buckle are for the the
cinchs that have holes in them. It's more like a regular belt,
or for extra reinforcement. I've used them before and like them
much better than looping the cinch all around girth iron.

the buckle.. yes I'm a western rider..
and the buckle is in fact (as someone mentioned) TO USE with cinches
(cinch strap ) that has holes,. I however prefer the looping
method. its doesnt slip and is more secure, the buckle on the other
hand can just pop and thats all you got

Thanks Wendi! A friend of mine was telling me I *must* use the
buckle..and to me it did not seem very secure. I'm glad that I
don't *have* to use it. I much rather loop it through
Thanks for clearing it up for me

Oh, the Buckle! Now I get it..:-)
If you use leather, then the looping method of securing
is better as leather can stretch and POP! goes the buckle
(and you!)...If you use nylon, then the buckle can be used
for securing instead of looping it, or, as in my case, I do
both.
