1415.0. "SAND COLIC" by TOOHOT::SREMILLARD () Tue Feb 12 1991 11:27

We live in Arizona and I must deal with the prevention of sand
colic. It seems like "just breathing" causes the nags to injest
sand (it is even in the "cleanest" of hay).

I have found a wonderful product called Equi-Aid and it helps move
the sand through the horse's system and to pass what sand may be
in the intestines. My riding nag is on it twice a week (It comes
with a measuring cup) and my old nag gets it twice a day as he is
a sand eater and seems to want to commit sand colic suicide.

If you live in a sandy area an easy way to tell if your horse has
a lot of sand in their system is to take fresh manure (that has no
dirt on it) and to place it in a bucket with water. Let it soak
for about ten minutes and then pour off the hay/grain substance
(this floats to the top) and look at the bottom of the bucket. IF
there is sand... you will see it. (I have to keep a "tester"
bucket for testing once a week on Nashoba.)

I have to buy the Equi-Aid in the large buckets (13 or 15 lbs) and
the best price I have come up with is a total of $55.00 for
shipping and Arizona sales tax. With Nashoba needing so much of
this.. does anyone know of a better price? I will need at least
    	one a month.

Sand Colic is a very serious thing here and one of my neighbor's
horses died of it just before we moved out here.

    	Any leads would be appreciated..

    	Thanks.. Susan

We have the same problem here in Northwest Florida . . . sand. I have
been using a similar product called Equilax, and have not had ANY colic
    since.

If you don't mind me asking... where do you buy your Equilax
and what is the going $$?

Last year I bought a 12 pound tub of Equi-Lax by Turf Champion at a
local tack/feed shop on sale for $71.16.

However, last year's Jeffers Vet Supply Catalog lists three variations
    at a cheaper price.

        10 lbs. $47.25
        25 lbs. $99.95

      Horse-Lax 50% Psyllium Hydrophillic Mucilloid
         8 oz. trial size $2.95
         3 lbs. $16.75
        10 lbs. $41.99

      Equi-Aid 100% Psyllium Hydrophilic Mucilloid
         6 oz. $2.75
         3 lbs. $13.95
        13 lbs. $49.00
        20 lbs. $69.95
        50 lbs. $162.00

You may want to give Jeffers a call at 800 633-7592 for more
     current pricing and/or a catalog.
