1394.0. "Speaker/Field trip Suggestions" by NUTS::BUSHMAN () Wed Nov 21 1990 08:38

Our 4-H group (in Middlesex County, MA) is very small this year, and
has a varied set of interests. We have 2 hunt seat people, 1 stock seat,
1 saddle seat, 1 eventer, and a couple horse-lovers. We are looking
for interesting speakers to come talk, or good field trips. We can
pay a small speaker fee, but don't have tons of money to spend. We
also can invite other clubs to join us, if we aren't big enough to
    warrant a visit from someone!

Can you make any suggestions for people you've heard talk, or
places you've been that are horse-related, but not TOO specific
in a particular discipline? For instance, next week we'll have
Jean McCarthy, the Blue Seal grain representative come talk about
    hays and grains.

    Thanks - Kate

1394.2A few suggestions.......BOOVX1::MANDILEWed Nov 21 1990 10:0419
Field trip suggestions: Budweiser Clydesdales (NH)

    			     Hallamore Clydesdales (Lakeville, MA)

My horse club did the Hallamore Clydesdales and had lunch
    afterwards. Short/ 30 mins-It was O.K. I think the "Buds" are better!!!!

MSPCA-Nevins Farm/Methuen - This is where all the horses confiscated
by the MSPCA go. Who knows, you might be able to find a home for
one of the "adoptables", or better yet, take one home! :-)

If you can trailer your horses.....a group ride to/on Sandy Neck
Beach in Sandwich, MA. I have info on this if you would like a
copy, (map, directions, info....) Horsebackriding along the
    beach is nice!

1394.3SpeakersEQUINE::DANIMon Nov 26 1990 17:1630
For speakers how about:

1) A horse massage therapist
2) A vet on regular maintenance and emergencies
3) SOmeone on the TEAM method Linda Tellington-Jones method of working
   with difficult horses.
4) Some how to's
Getting ready for a show or remote trail ride.
	Horse photography
Cleaning tack (safety check and part identification)
They can learn both english and western parts.
	What a judge looks for...
How to show in hand (they can practice taking turns being the
horse and handler - low equipment requirements)
How to read horse body language.
5) How about a talk on harnessing and driving with a demo

Most of these either have no specific English/Western association or can
include both.

Sorry I don't have specific names but I thought the
topic might be helpful and others in the notes file might be able to supply
places and names.

Good Luck!

Dani

I've already spoken to Kate about this, but I'll mention it
in case anybody else had an interest - my husband, Wayne, is
a horse dentist and will give speeches to any group about the
care of horses' teeth, etc. Either send me mail, or call us at
    	(508) 865-7402.

    Hi Kate! Long time....

I know of a horse photographer if your interested, don't know if
she can/can't do it ... but she was recommended to me because she
    does photo clinics...

I'd also want to go if you do a clip on photography ;*}....

1394.6What our club has been doing.LUDWIG::ROCKSat Dec 15 1990 10:4543
Our 4-h club iis in Southboro, Mass.

We in the past have set up in the good weather to go to local horse
farms or stables. we one summer went to a Q.H. farm in Grafton,
Morgans on Bolton, Paints in Stow....And so on. I went into the
Pedlar and went into the breed sections and pulled out names and
called to set up time and places.

we have been on tours at Tuffs Animal Hospital....they do not like
kids under 13 due to liability insurance so it is hard to get in
    there.

Jean McCarthy is good, The "tooth fairy" as the kids call them on
care of the horses teeth are good. The blacksmith is interesting...mine
has a foot she brings so the kids can open it (it is on hinges)
and see the inside of the foot).

We had the local vet come and speak now twice on emergency care
and once another proper care and housing of our horses.

The FIRE DEPERTMENT...this is very good if your fire department
will come and talk of safty in the barn and prevention of fires
andwhat to do incase of fires.

We have been to the Zoo in Mendon during the summer, have fitting
andshowing clinics. We have had judges come and talk on what a judge
    looks for in the ring.

fun meeting even for the horse kids are riding clinics...we try
to have one or two a summer where the horse lovers who take lessons
can take a 1/2 hour lesson on a friends horse with and instructor
and the horse owner kids ride their own on a lesson.

We have done crafts just before Xmas...to take home for mom and
dad, Halloween party with costume judging.

I guess I could go on and on.

Maybe some time our two clubs could get together.

    Have fun,

    terry
