894.0. "1991 Dressage Tests" by VMSSPT::PAANANEN () Thu Nov 15 1990 15:18

For all you who have been waiting anxiously, here are the 1991
tests in the following replies. I post them here for easier
reference, (so that they are not buried amongst the dressage
discussions.) With any luck they have been transcribed without
typos...(another reason why they are a separate topic)!

I understood that there is a requirement in the fifth level test for
    your horse to:

E	Nibble the geraniums on top of the letter marker

and at the end of the test

C	Knock down gate steward on exiting the ring

Training Level Dressage tests? I want to do some
looking into Dressage, as the other horse I have
has some Dressage training....(I will be borrowing
quite a few books on Dressage tonight, as a matter of fact! (: )

> Now where can I get an explaination of them?

Read your dressage books! You didn't say which ones you have but
    here are some suggestions:
     - a good inexpensive paperback one called "Dressage for
	    Beginners" by ffrench Blake.
     - Dressage Illustrated (one book for each test) - (plastic bound
pages so you can safely take it to the barn with you) has
a "map" of each movement of the test.
     - Common Sense Dressage by Sally O'Connor - good pictures and
explanations of what the horse should look like while
"on the bit", doing "shoulder-in", etc.

I'm sure John D'A will have a few more suggestions.

I'd recommend books in several categories: 1) riding technique/skills,
2) training techniques/goals/philospohy and 3) how-to-ride the tests

The following might be appropriate for a new dressage rider:

Category 1 (riding) (see notes 10.69 and 10.75 for more description)

    1. Start Riding Right by Commandant Jean Licart, Arco Publishing,
    2. An Anatomy of Riding by H. Schusdziarra, MD and V. Schusdziarra, MD,
        Breakthrough Publications
    3. Centered Riding by Sally Swift, David & Charles
    4. The Natural Rider and Ride with Your Mind both by Mary Wanless

Category 2 (training)
    1. Make the Most of Your Horse by Jan Dickerson (see note 1396.8 but the
reserved copy of the book mentioned in that note is long gone)
    2. The Essence of Horsemanship by Waldemar Seunig, J.A. Allen & CO
(see note10.69 for more description but this is the world's best small
        book on training)
    3. Horsemanship by Waldemar Seunig - Longer and more theoretical form of
        the previous book

Category 3 (tests) (see note 10.719 for more description)
    1. The Competitive Edge by Max Gawhyler
    2. Ride a Winning Dressage Test by Gen. J. Burton

The book, "Guide to Dressage" by Louise Mills Wilde, A.S. Barnes & Co.(see
note 10.69 for more info) sort of covers all three categories. I call it
the "comparative dressage book" because it breaks down a test into movements
and discusses how authors from various schools of horsemanship suggest
training for the movement. The book also discusses the aids suggested by the
various authors. This could be very good OR very confusing for a
beginner...I'm not sure which. It would certainly make the point that there is
no single way to do anything! I'm not sure whether this book has been modified
to reflect the current tests. It is useful even if it has not been updated.
The theory, aids and movements haven't changed, just the order and level at
which they are introduced in AHSA tests.

I'm not at all familiar with the books mentioned in .35 but there are lots
of good books around. The ones I mentioned here are just a few that might
be useful to a novice dressage rider.

I'd reccomend you find a good instructor.

If you can understand how say shoulder in feels by reading
a book, your way ahead of me !

    Hey, I'm still working on the correct method to salute! (;
Or, the trot rising part! (: (:

Thanks for all the tips....I will be going to watch a point
show on the 6th, so I should be able to fill the test sheets
    .1-.4 with many notes!
