| Hi Lora!!
Congratulations on your new standardbred!! I am the proud owner of
4 standardbreds!! I have 2 that are currently in training for racing
one that is a yearling, and one that is a riding horse. You will find
that they are the most level headed, easy to handle horses. I have
ridden them all my life, in shows and competative trail rides mostly.
If the horse was properly broken, she should have no problem driving
again. Probably the best thing would be to have someone who has had
a lot of driving experience help you. I use my riding horse mare as
a pleasure driving horse and she is great. Maine has a great
organization for standardbreds off the track that are used as riding
horses and they run shows etc for them! Good luck and send me mail
if you have any more questions!!

| Hi Linda,
Maine has an organization for Standardbred off the track and run
shows for them!??! That's great! Do you know where, what , who??
I'd love to take my mare to one of those shows next year! I had
no idea there was such a thing out there! Could you possibly
print the contact address in here for others who have Standardbreds
and may be interested?? Thanks,
Linda C.

| Hi Linda!!
I will look through some of my old Maine Harness newspapers and see
if I can find any information on the club. They seem to be really
active.

I don't have the specific information that you're looking
for BUT! The Horsemans' Yankee Pedlar generally has an
article written by the secretary of the Maine Standardbred
Pleasure Horse Assoc.......... worth a look..

Hi Lora,
If you need professional assistance in retraining your horse
to drive, the trainer at our barn does wonderful work with
the training of horses. She is also the owner of Royal Escort,
a Carriage business that she runs for weddings and special occasions.
I believe that she is fairly willing to travel. Her name is Barbara
Lowes, and her number is (508) 346-9949 for her Feed/Tack Shop and
(508) 372-8644 for her home. She has been involved in horses for
many years and is presently conducting a class through Northern Essex
Community College on Driving. I'm sorry I didn't post the Class info
earlier, since you may have gained a lot of info and insight on driving
from it. I understand that they held the first class last night and
had an attendance of over twenty people.
Give her a call. Good luck with your new critter, it sounds like
you will get some real enjoyment from her.

thanks all for all the info i've been sent directly. As an
update, we've moved her to a stable where all three of us are being
trained for driving. She's been there only 2 1/2 days and we've all
learned so much that it's hard to believe. She's really something and
i'm so glad i bumped into her. I simply don't understand why they're
not more popular!
I've beem doing a lot of riding and found that lowering her bit &
keeping a lite contact on her mouth allows her to extend her head and
lower it thereby moving into it rather that getting behind it. She's
slowed down, stopped wobbling her head, is going in a straight line and
thinking about taking the bit....the trot's another story, she begins
by moving out then all's lost. The slower, more relaxed i get her the
move comfortable her trot.
We're looking for a cart and harness. Does anyone know if there's a
"for sale' note in this file? Also, we'd like to find the equipment
within reasonable distance of home in new ipswich nh north of ashby
mass and below peterbough NH.
thanks again for your support and comments,
lora

| Hi Lora,
You can put an ad in here stating what you are looking for, etc
by replying to note 22. Simply type 22, and when it brings up
the topic type REPLY and the system will guide you from there.
If you read topic 5, it will show you a list of all the ForSale/
Wanted/Annoucement type topics.
Your mare sounds really sweet! I know from my own experience that
Standardbreds are easily retrained given patience and are willing
and capable of doing just about anything! Keep us posted on your
progress!
