1335.0. "How to encourage re-growth of hair?" by IAMOK::BAXTER () Fri Aug 17 1990 10:00

    My horse has an old injury that never wants to heal.

    It scabs over and then the scab falls off but, no hair grows.

    Is there any medication that I can use to premote hair growth.

    thanks

1335.1A suggestion.....PEKING::GILLOTTWFri Aug 17 1990 10:595
    I have had the same problem with my horse where he has cut himself
    in the field. I use something called Cornucresin, which premotes
    hair and hoof growth, it is very good and only takes a couple of
    days before you can see the hair starting to grow back.

1335.3Coconut oilODDONE::SANWELLMon Aug 20 1990 05:449
    I don't know if you can get it in the States but you certainly can in
    England, its called Coconut Oil. You warm it up to melt it down and
    then apply to hairless area, then within days hair can be seen growing
    back.

    Always used to keep a supply in winter when the NZ rug rubbed.

You know that nasty bald band that you see on the faces of horses
that have been wearing an ill-fitting halter? Well I bought a horse
last summer that had seen some hard times, and he has one of these.

He is about 12 years old. I don't have any idea of how long this
baldness has existed, but judging from the dent in his nose, he
was wearing that halter since his youth (he's really got quite a cute
face despite it). Anyway, does anyone know of any secret potions or
anything that might help me grow this back. I don't care of it comes
in white, if it will come in. Any tricks on getting tails to grow would
be great too. Someone ate his tail up to the bone.

	Thanks!

		JoAnne and Zeus

P.S.
I discovered this poor fellow tied to a pickett fence at a beach house in
Marshfield. He was kept in a yard with four dogs and a shetland pony. This
yard was no more that 40 x 40 feet (no exageration). It was on the BEACH!
No grass, no fresh water. The pony had been living on Zeus's tail. Zeus
had a mouthful of Gravy Train that he had just scarfed out of one of
the dog dishes. It was unbelievable!! He provided me with quite an education
on the equine skeletal structure. He has put on almost 300 lbs since then and
looks WONDERFUL. I would have taken the pony too, but the girl told me he
had been sold and someone was coming for him.

I just don't understand what people are thinking that could allow a helpless
1000lb animal waste away in their yard. This girl actually had the nerve to
say to me that she didn't think he looked that bad!!!

    These kinds of stories always leave me crying. I hope you reported
    these people to the ASPCA. Maybe in these cases, the best thing to do
    is not only call the SPCA, but to also write them and cc: the owners so
    that they know that they are being watched and other people do care and
    will take action if they don't.

    The best hair growing potion I have ever seen is a few dabs of fresh
    (clean) motor oil, but I'm not sure how safe that is (someone I knew
    who had a well-known parade horse taught me that one). If the patches
    have been bald for a long time, there may not be any roots left, in
    which case nothing short of a hair transplant will help.
1335.6Great thing you did! USMFG::NROSTANZOTue Feb 26 1991 13:2112

    Joanne,

    Good for you! Thank god you found him, lord knows how long he was
    suffering.... Don't know much about growing the hair back, but
    good luck! Can you write me off-line where you found him?

    Does anyone know/have any pictures of an under-weight and/or a ASPCA
    pamphlet that might have some pictures of malnurished/thin horses?
    I could use a copy.

1335.7Corona Ointment for re-growing hairKOPEC::ROBERTSTue Feb 26 1991 13:477
    I've had really good results with Corona Ointment, when it comes to
    trying to get hair to grow back. Course, if the halter rubbed so much
    that it destroyed the hair follicles themselves, nothing will bring it
    back. But I've used this stuff on some pretty old and tough looking
    spots and had good results. Give it a try.

    We use Dr. Daniels Hopple Chafe, it is great for growing hair back
    on horses. There was a cat at the barn who lost all the hair on her
    legs, so we put it on her too, and her hair grew back after being
    gone for almost a year!
1335.9vaselineSSVAX::DALEYTue Feb 26 1991 15:274
    I have always had good luck using dabs of vasoline and massaging it
    gently into the bald area. Don't know if it was the massaging or the
    vasoline but it always works.

1335.10Not Motor Oil.SMAUG::GUNNMAILbus ConductorTue Feb 26 1991 17:339
    re .1

    Motor Oil, even clean unused Motor Oil, is highly suspect for any use
    other than in an engine. While motor oil shares some constituents with
    mineral oils used for dermatological purposes (vaseline, baby oil) it
    contains other additives meant only for keeping an internal combustion
    engine running, not for growing the hair on a horse's nose. In
    sufficient quantity these additives will cause problems. I would stick
    to vaseline or baby oil.

    I dont think you can bring it back.. I wouldnt use motor oil cuz of the
    detergents (that would be more drying, babyoil.. i would try, but as
    long as you keep off the halter maybe the hair will eventually grow
    back..) as (this is worth a shot.. is using cut heal junk its supposed
    to stimulate skin growth, it might help the hair) I tend to
    think that if you use too much oil, it will discourge the hair growth.

    I had a mare that got bite on the bottom (just above the tail)
    i had halter classes, and there was that ole' bite mark (argh!!!!!!)
    it took a year to grown back, i put oil, etc, i left it alone and
    eventually it came back...sometimes it doesnt tho'

1335.13Washing tails is so much fun!!! :-) BOOVX2::MANDILEWed Feb 27 1991 12:0436
    Aaarrgghhhh! Sorry, I just had to get that out...whenever
    I hear of this type of abuse, it really gets me angry!!!
    If you can keep checking to make sure the pony does go,
    and if after a week, it's still there, report them!!!!!

    The face:
    Clean the area thoroughly with a gentle horse shampoo and
    water with a soft sponge. Pat dry with clean towel/cloth
    (don't rub!) and put on some type of ointment like Corona,
    Furacin paste, bagbalm, etc. on it to keep the skin moist
    and try to promote hair growth. If, like others have said,
    the folicles are still ok, you might get some growth back.

    The tail - Is it caked with dirt & dandruff & gunk, too?
    Or just chewed short? First, soak the tail DOWN to the
    SKIN with mineral oil. (NOT babyoil, it has perfume in it).
    leave on until it has moistened the tail & skin up well, then
    shampoo w/warm water and a mild shampoo (A dandruff shampoo
    like Selsun Blue will work for dandruff, a mild human hair
    shampoo or horse shampoo will clean up the dirt & gunk,
    rinse thoroughly or he will rub it because the soap left
    behind will make it itchy) After thoroughly rinsing, use
    a human hair conditioner (I buy the generic bottle of balsam
    & protein from the store, the big one, about 16 ozs)
    mix it 50/50 with water, and pour thru hair on tail. Again,
    RINSE THOROUGHLY! Then braid tail (I know, there isn't anything
    left to braid!) Braiding promotes growth, but washing stimulates
    the hair growth too. Keeping it clean will promote growth, too.
    I you can buy a hair polish like Lasersheen or Showsheen, this
    sprayed on the mane & tail after last rinsing will help keep
    the hair clean, repel dirt and keep down the tangles.

    Good luck!

1335.15Scarlet OilDASXPS::KROYMon Mar 04 1991 08:488
    We bought a horse many years ago who had been out to pasture for months
    and his halter had to be cut off and out piece by piece. We used
    Scarlet Oil on his face and it did a very nice job and it smells real
    good too.

    Good luck

1335.16Ever tried Desitin?MR4DEC::GCOOKSave the SkeetsMon Mar 04 1991 08:539
    What is scarlet oil? I've never heard of it and I'm always interested
    in products that will enhance rapid regrowth of hair.

    Actually, one of my all time favorites, that seems to start healing
    and regrowing hair overnight is Desitin. It must have to do with the
    fish oil or something.
