609.0. "Wm H. Begg Riding Academy Info?" by TSDOC::BERRY () Fri Aug 10 1990 17:32

Hi,

I moved to Wayland, MA a while ago and I would like to get back into riding.
I haven't riden in about 3 years, I use to ride hunter and some dressage.

Is any one familiar with the Wm H. Begg Riding Academy on Old Conn. Path in
Wayland? What are the school horses like, what about instruction, general
care of the horses, stables and ring. Any good or bad experiences?

I use to ride at Trailmere in Hopkington and liked it, but I was hoping to
get something a little closer to home.

Thanks for the insights.

I couldn't help but reply....I don't have any recent info on
Begg's, but I lived in Mass 12 yrs ago and Mr. Begg gave me my
very first lessons. I thought he was a great instructor at the
time and the horse I used was vey good (Melody). Mr. Begg was
getting on in years at the time, so I don't know if he is
actually still around or if his kids run the place now.

Boy, talk about a blast from the past!!! 12 yrs may have made
a difference on the place, but from what I remember, I had some
    of my best times there!!

609.3I was there in 1966NUTMEG::HEWSONWed Aug 15 1990 18:2725
Well I have Note .1 beat. I boarded my horse with Bill Begg in 1966.
He is a terrific horseman, and has taught many good riders and trained
great horses. When I was there, Karen (Wennberg) Stives (from our
Olympic 3 Day Team) was boarding her horses and taking lessons. At
that time, one of her horses was a large pony, Storm Warning, who was
Large Working Hunter Pony Champion in Madison Square Garden in 1963.
Bill had trained Storm Warning for Karen.

One time, I saw Bill take the bridle off one of his horses and proceed
to jump the horse over a course of 4 ft jumps in his ring. Years ago,
I think that Bill was a Timber Horse jockey (steeplechasing over timber
    or rail fences.)

I agree that Bill has to be pretty old right now, so I would wonder if
he would be teaching himself, but he would have well qualified
instructors. I have heard recently that he is still alive. The stable
will only be there as long as he is alive, as the original owner of
that estate left it in his will that Bill could stay there until he
dies. At that point, it will go to the other heirs. So his children
will not be running the business.

As you can tell, I would recommend trying a few lessons there.

    Priscilla,
I did receive your mail yesterday, but I can't reply! MAIL
just keeps telling me the destination is invalid. Try calling
my DTN - I looked you up in ELF, but you're not listed there.
