1316.0. "Rapping (aka Poling)" by FORTY2::GUNN (MAILbus Conductor) Tue Jul 24 1990 08:03

    Paul Schokemhle, the German international show jumper, has got himself
    into a whole heap of trouble over the last few weeks over "rapping".
    The controversy has effected Germany's participation in the Equestrian
    World Championships in Sweden.

    Two weeks ago two German magazines and a TV station did an expos on
    Schokemhle's training methods which included rapping. Rapping is
    raising the top bar of a fence to bring it in contact with a horse's
    legs as the horse jumps it to "encourage" the horse to jump clean.
    Schokemhle claimed only to be using "light bamboo poles" but the
    pictures show something different.

    This became a big time sporting scandal in Germany. Paul Schokemhle
    has announced he is selling his horse business, the sponsor of a horse
    show he organizes dropped out so the show has been cancelled and some
    of his students, also shown on the TV pictures have dropped out of the
    German show jumping team.

    Having just been in Germany on a trip for Digital, I was surprised to
    see 10minutes of a TV news programme devoted to the scandal some six
    days after it first broke. Two weeks later, the German paper I got on
    the plane from Mnich to London has an article on the issue.

    Personally I believe that those, both trainers and riders, resorting
    to "rapping" should be equally "encouraged" by having an electric
    cattle prod applied to them at the same critical moment.

The most recent "Chronicle of the Horse" also talks about this whole
incident...
1316.3This can have disastrous results....TFOR2::GOODNOWWed Jul 25 1990 14:268

    I had a friend who was jumping her horse, and the trainer was rapping
    him with a bamboo pole.... well, the pole snapped and the horse came
    down on it. The jagged edge went right into his chest and he was
    killed.  Very sad and unnecessary.

1316.4"RAPPING USED BY THE UNTALENTED...."VANISH::PAGEThu Aug 16 1990 10:417
    " RAPPING " it is discusting, the sick people who use this method,
    obviously have no real talent in producing a horse. Showjumping in
    England, is becoming a "coyboys game", basically it is the tacky,
    suspicous charactors who indulge in this sort of behaviour..!!!!
    I agree, the people who do this to horses, should at the same time,
    have an electric cattle prodder up their a***...that will make then
    jump...!!!!!!
