    My horse "Joey" has BIG Chustnuts about 1" or more pertruding out.
    I know your suppoesed to pick them off, but they are so BIG and hard
    that I cant get them off (Im affraid of hurting him) I even tryed
    soaking them hopig that they would soften up..but NO..now they are
    bigger..can I use a knife and cut a bit off unitl I can get them down
    to where I can pick them????  or will an knife hurt?
    
    My mare never gres chustnust so Im not to familar with them

    I wouldn't go at them with a knife as you might start them bleeding.
    I would start putting vaseline on them a couple of times a day until
    you could start peeling them off.

    Vaseline...thanks...I think that will work,,I did'nt even think of 
    that!  I knew I could count on you guys..If it does not work Ill
    let you know...

    I've used bag balm, when I forgot to bring vaseline to the barn.  It
    seems to work as well.

    Hoof dressing work very well to soften the chestnuts in about 2-3 
    days.  I use Absorbine Hooflex, but just about any petroleum based
    dressing should be okay.

    Vasaline is the best I've found, but Corona (sp) works great too.
