1288.0. "Trailer Hitch Installation" by MERLAN::KJROY () Thu Jun 14 1990 09:43

How do most people have their trailer hitches installed? Do you
bolt on or have them welded on? What is the difference in the
classes (ex. Class 3) is it just the weight they can pull or
distribute? I'm finding this very confusing!

    Thanks

We got talking about hitches at the barn yesterday and someone said
that it is illegal to have the hitch welded to the vehicle and if
something happens to it the insurance won't cover you. I had never
heard of this but it may be worth checking with your insurance
    company to find out.

I had the hitch (class 3) put on my van last fall, at U-Haul. I
had told them what is was for, and they set the whole thing up.
My brother had mentioned possibly having in welded on, but when
I asked U-Haul if they welded or bolted, they said all of them are
bolted on. I can't imagine any reason to take it off in my own
personal situation, but I can see how some people may have the need
to, and it's nice to have the option.

Because hitches attach to the main frame of the vehicle it is not a
good idea to weld them on. Welding can change the strength of the metal
from the tremendous heat and the manner in which it cools. Heat
treating is used to change the shear strength of bolts etc. but I would
not want my frame heat treated as it would lose flexability. Bolts do
the job without adding possible problems.
This is a highly condensed version of what my dad, a welding expert,
    told me.

No wonder why I'm so confused! I've spoken to two different places
they WELD the hitches on, they have to be insured themselves to
do this, but it is perfectly legal and in fact most of the people
I've talked to have them welded to the frame.
It seems like most of the people in here have them bolted on.

    Thanks
