My neighbor took a standardbred she was offered for free last year. Of course, the poor thing was neglected, and she has done a good job of cleaning him up and putting on weight. She seems to have a problem getting around to keeping his feet shod properly. This time its been about 6+ mths since the last farrier visit. She lets her husband trim the hooves. I can only imagine what this is doing! But, she is the type that does not accept advice, unless she asks for it first. So, I have learned to say nothing unless she asks a specific question. The vet came friday for spring shots. We got together so we could split the farm call. The vet (of course!) noticed the poor condition of his hooves, and started to give her detailed instructions of what was needed, and what might happen i.e. navicular, etc. She kept on saying "I know, I know", trying to brush off the subject. I was so tempted to slap her! GRRRRRRRRRR. L-

I understand how you feel, I have been there too. May I offer a possible solution. If she was willing to get together for a vet call, maybe you could get together for a farrier call too. That was how I got one of my disorganised friends to keep after feet regularly. She just couldn't be bothered making the appointments. Sandy
1245.2 | I tried that!!!!! (Too!) | BOOVX2::MANDILE | Mon Apr 30 1990 10:50 | 14
Re .1 - I tried this!!!!!!! I called her to let her know I was able to "get in contact" with the farrier, as he is hard to contact. She said no, not this time, she would have to do something next week. SHE then called me the day AFTER he came, wanting to know if she could bring (sneak) him down while the farrier was there. I told her she missed him, he was scheduled yesterday and he had already come. She shrugged it off, and I,m sure he still hasn't been done. Oh well, I tried.......
1245.3 | talk with the vet? | TLE::DINGEE | This isn't a rehearsal, you know. | Tue May 01 1990 16:19 | 10 |
Well, now the vet knows about the poor guy's feet, and the vet knows that the woman "knows" what to do about them. So, talk to the vet. Who's in a better position to know that the feet are really in poor shape? Maybe the vet knows what he or she can do about this, or would be willing to 'drop by and see how the feet are coming along', and in a nice way get her to give them more care. Can't hurt to mention it to the vet... |
