| I think it would depend on the situation, but basically I would report
it to the authorities immediately. Horses and drugs definitely don't
mix, whether at stable or at a show. In the case of at a stable, if
the manager's didn't take immediate action of some sort, I would find a
new place fast.

Don't cope with it. Call the proper authorities.

| I'm not so sure caling the local constabulary is a good idea. They
tend to arrive en masse with guns ablaze (well almost). Right behind
them come the news crews. That's an awful lot of bad PR for a few
idiots.

| Not the police. Just the people running the show, so that they can
take whatever action they deem appropriate.

I've seen a lot of it, too - especially at the barn I worked at when I
was in high school. One problem, though - the trainer ended up being
the dealer! He's in jail now, I hear, but there's probably more
trainers like him out there...
I have a friend who spent a year as a working student with a very well
known and competent event rider. She was shocked at the excessive drug
use she came into contact with, and the worst offender was the rider
my friend was there to learn from.
It's all pretty sad.

1204.6 | Who you gonna call -The Cops | WJOUSM::NICKERSON | Bob Nickerson DTN 282-1663 :^) | Mon Mar 12 1990 13:36 | 8 |
| By all means call the police. The show committee has very little
latitude here except to call the police or to worse to let it slide.
We're not talking about misusing bute here, this is a drug that kills
people. We need to get this stuff off our streets and away from our
kids. The best way to do that is for us (the silent majority) to say,
I'm made as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

1204.7 | Not to mention.... | BOOVX1::MANDILE | | Wed Mar 14 1990 13:47 | 7 |
| Not to mention the danger they become riding a horse High! (no pun
intended) Auto accidents are bad enough, but some idiot out of
control on a horse? It gives me the shudders just thinking about
it. Report it to the show managers.

1204.8 | Up here | CGOO01::LMILLER | Now try it once more ...... | Tue Mar 20 1990 17:59 | 13 |
| Up here they are testing people for drugs as well as horses, at
least at recognized shows. If fact, at Spruce Meadows, they (riders
etc) had a pep talk regarding the use of drugs, and if any abuse
was found they would be thrown out in disgrace and the proper
authorities would be notified etc.
Unrecognized shows would be a problem, I would tell the show committee,
failing that I would write the provincal(state) authorities or
breed affilates. Most shows even if not CEF recognized do fall
under one of the others. A very small show - I guess I'd still
try the committee. I actually haven't seen much, but I'm very naive.

| I live in So. Cal and drug abuse is seen every day. I don't like to
see it and don't tolorate at all. I turned my brother in when I found
out he was dealing at my High school. Personaly, if it were legal, I
would shot to kill.(just a phrase) I have a 3.5 yr old son who I don't
want to go to school in this area. I can't afford to move to the
middle of nowhere so he can be safe. I have concidered giving custody
to my X so my son can go to school in Texas. My X lives in a remote
oil and there is still a one room school house used.
\The problem is everywhere and it scares me to death that convicted
dealers and manufacturers don't recieve stiffer sentences.
Just my overheated .02 worth
