| Overheard from a prominent dressage trainer attempting to teach
the sitting trot...
"Open your butt."
One can only imagine what this is supposed to mean.

| I like this note...
when learning to ride I once had a very prominant instructor
screaming at me to "Bag my reins" ...I just pulled up and asked
her to explain in english, she was not amused! Never rode with
HER again.

1203.3 | hunt seat equitation | DYO780::AXTELL | Dragon Lady | Wed Mar 07 1990 12:03 | 10 |
| Here's one from a new hunt seat student of mine.
"When riding in the froward seat, the only correct position is
to have you feet parallel to the horse, not gripping/touching
with your knees, and... grip with the front quarter (shin area)
of you calf".
Needless to say this is 1) impossible to achieve 2) painful to
attempt and 3) leads to lots of falls.

I had a trainer tell me that it was totally acceptable to learn to
canter on the third lesson. To help me learn this she first
had me hold on to the breast collar or martingale and then after
I broke 3 of them hanging on for dear life, she had me
hold the pommel of the saddle. After I had an accident that
resulted in a concussion, I opted to find a trainer that
was more concerned with my safety.
btw, sounds like some of her advice in the previous note. I could
swear I'd heard it before.......

| re. hunt seat eq..
i know of an instructor that was telling me thats how she teaches her
students, personally i thought it was whacked! Are you really* supposed
to ride like that? My horse is so light sided, you'd be peelin' her
off the ceiling!

| Wendy,
If you ride like that, you're going to need a life time of chiropractor
sessions! So I guess the dumb answer is - "NO!"
Besides being painful, it looks really dumb.

1203.7 | Funny , not so much dumb..... | BOOVX2::MANDILE | | Thu Mar 08 1990 10:48 | 9 |
| Not so much dumb as funny......I was trying to learn to
lope and was bouncing all over the saddle. The trainer
told me to pretend like I was having "sex" and copy the
movement. I started laughing so hard I had to stop riding
completely before I fell off!
BUT, when I could concentrate again, it worked!!!!!!

| I had a trainer who was totaly frustrated with my bareback equitation
that he shoved a stick down my shirt one day. That helped the "hunched
back" but my seat was still tucked under too far. I told him if he was
the expert, he could do it and show me the errors of my ways.
He agreed and climbed onto my 16.2 RunningQh. To say, Big Ben had
a set of withers. My trainer began to lope and stuck his rear out to
show me how to do it right. I asked him if it was uncomforable. Being
on the other side of the arena he shoted "No!!". We all know what that
sounds like to a western pleasure horse, don't we. Needless to say,
the man fell off the horse and said I could ride any way I wanted to
from now on!
