Has anyone used neoprene for a girth cover? I currently use girth covers with good success, but my girths still end up soaked. When camping or on a ride I end up taking one of every day and that can add up. I have used neoprene on the center of the chestpiece of my biothane breastplate with no problems. I am worried about the possible heat build-up of the neoprene as I know that diving suits use the same material and they really cause you to *SWEAT* (or glisten if yer a lady..) I thought with using the neoprene, I could keep my girth dry and it would be fairly easy to maintain the cover - just swish it in a bucket (to remove salt and grime) and it would be ready to go in the morning. I know the Ortho-Flex saddles use neoprene in the construction of their girths, and would like to hear some feed back. I don't want to use something that would possibly lay up my nag for a month or more because of a "synthetic burn". Susan

We use neoprene neck sweats, etc for sweating some of the excess off the halter horses and I know the lather they get into. I don't think I would want to put it on a girth. There is a lot of motion down there and movement for that matter...I would think the animal would get a sore. Just my opinion...

Hi Susan, Neoprene?? I'm not so sure that I'd recommend a neoprene girth cover. Having dealt with neoprene neck sweats, I'm always careful to put a cotton wrap under the neoprene to avoid blistering. I would suspect you could have the same problem as a girth. A suggestion is to consider the cotton humane girth. They come in either tapered or not. I'm using one currently and really like it. Yes, it does get wet, but you can dunk it for cleaning. As they do breath, I'd say using it wet is better than a neoprene cover. I've used mine for the past 3 months in the mud and snow and haven't had any problems. The cost of the girth is about $28 dollars and they come dark brown in color. I bought mine at the Sign of the Horse in Concord, N.H. They are new this year and I'd recommend their use to anyone. Cathy Good luck...

RE: .3 Thanks Cathy, I appreciate your view. I have since moved to Cave Creek Arizona and I have no intention to use the neoprene now (with the summers as hot as they get here). I was thinking of a girth COVER because I have an Aussie saddle and it has an unusual girth rigging. I invested in an extra girth and use one/wash one and this seems to work out fine for now. I am not sure what I will do when it comes to a long ride.... I guess can use "wooly" covers, but they are such a pain when it comes to girthing up. I guess I am just curious because I have seen Ortho-Flex saddles for sale out here too and they have the neoprene girth. Any comments from Ortho-Flex owners "out there"?? Susan |
