1131.0. "Xmas traditions & wish lists" by WEDOIT::NANCY () Tue Nov 28 1989 16:35

    I thought it might be fun to find out what people buy their horses
    for xmas...it's a great time of year to pamper your best friend..
    do you????

    	In the barn the other night I was thinking of xmas and the
    horses and that it would be a nice xmas present if someone were
    to buy them all new halters and matching lead lines. . .

    	Of course I'll get carried away by the spirit of things and
    be in the barn xmas eve making them their favorite bran mash...

    	What's on your xmas wish list for the horses? Are you planning
    some special purchase or treat for them or yourself?

    I would think xmas music in the barn a must??????!!!

1131.1Christmas Spirit!DECXPS::LCOBURNWed Nov 29 1989 08:0510
    At the barn our TB gelding is boarded at, everyone hangs a stocking
    on the horses' stall door. Then the day before Christmas people
    go around filling the stockings with horse goodies, etc. It really
    is fun! There is also a selected night about a week before Christmas
    that management cancels lessons and the boarders are allowed to
    have a Yule Party in the observation room (because it is heated!).
    Everyone brings a favorite dish (lots of carrot cakes!), and some
    of us even dress up our horses manes and tails in red and green
    ribbons!

1131.3boring presentsTOOK::SCHLENERWed Nov 29 1989 13:477
    My horse's present was a New Zealand rug and shipping boots. He's
    "REALLY" excited about them!

    For the first time ever, I'll be able to visit him on Christmas day.
    He'll get his favorite treat - a bag of carrots.

1131.4Bells!DUGGAN::FAYGET YOUR FUNK UPFri Dec 01 1989 16:4518
    This is going way back to something I did before I became
    a teenager.

    On Christmas Eve I used to deliver our family's gifts
    to neighbors on Horseback. I would bells across my horses
    chest and go from door to door delivering Cookies, etc.

    Then I turned 13 and decided this wasn't coolest thing for
    a teenager to do.

    But after that my friend and I often rode with bells on
    our horses prior to Christmas. NOTHING will put you in
    the spirit more!!

    Wreaths on the barn are a must - and we always gave them
    a special bran mash too!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Just to share a little Christmas Cheer.... We are planning a
    Caroling session at the barn I work at... a surprise to the
    woman who owns the horses (have to let her husband in on it or
    there won't be anyone home to carol for!) The five of us who
    work their will each take one of her arabs out for christmas
    caroling this year........ I just need to pick up some bells!

    Of course we'll have to pick some late afternoon (day) time to
    arrange this....... tis a bit nippy at night, not to mention
    the crazy winter driving .............

    Anyone else have any good christmas ideas?

1131.6Horse bells scare horses!PTOMV4::PETHMy kids are horsesTue Dec 12 1989 13:137
    Just a caution, I introduced my kids to sleigh bells for the first
    time a week ago. I walked into the barn with them and everyone
    fled outside. It has taken a week for 2 of them to not shy at the
    sound, and my old pony (24) still gets terrified. Get your bells
    early so the horses can get used to them.

1131.7 Bells on my fingers???USMFG::NROSTANZOTue Dec 12 1989 13:3417
    Sandy,

    Thanks for the word of caution, I do very well believe it..... I
    have a small string of bells to jingle, we won't be putting the
    string on the horses, but we are going to acquaint them now with
    them and decide which horses will be ok, if we don't have enough
    horses to do the ride with the bells; well drop them.

    I'm working very hard now with a 4 yr old, green gent that has had
    some bad experiences and I know all to well how terrified you can
    make a horse. He's coming along very well........ lots of hard
    work..... and he's just begun riding lessons with me and a trainer.

    Have a good Christmas All!

    yes he was....I finally had some nice folding saddle racks installed
    in my dressing room, water bucket hooks installed in the stalls in the
    trailer for when parked, door hooks outside. Lots of nice personal
    things this year. I did not ask for anything really horsey this year.
    Although, my Gramps gave us each a great check and with some of that
    money I thought I would take a few riding lessons in dressage. I ride
    balance seat (stock seat )now and the two styles of riding are very
    close. It would be fun I think and good for me to do at least in
    january and febuary then I will get back into riding my horses in
    March.

    thanks Santa.....
