1128.0. "Horse colds & coughing - supplies" by WEDOIT::NANCY () Fri Nov 17 1989 11:58

    My little 6 mo filly is coughing . I think she has a cold.
    Her breathing is a little congested and although I think this
    will pass with a little treatment ... I don't have supplies
    ...this is the first time I've had to deal with a coughing horse.
    I gave her a 1/2 tablet of bute to prevent a fever from developing
    and some vinegar in her feed to give her something to help cut
    through the congestion (vinegar). I really don't have anything
    else to give her. Does anyone have suggestions for:

    1) What I could keep in my medicine cabinet for colds & coughing?

    	I've never had a need for horse expectorants or electrolytes,
    now I'm thinking I should stock some of these things...what brand
    names would you suggest buying? I would like to have some things on
    hand to be able to give sick horses if directed...does anything come
    to mind that might be useful?

    	*medicines (should the horse owner keep penicillian or antibiotics
    		     on hand?)

    	*Non-drug items

    	*People remedies ( can you give a horse cough medicine?)

    P.S.
    I'm not asking anyone to suggest treatment...my Vet and I will be
    responsible for that. But my problem is that I don't have any
    supplies to draw upon for now or in the future. Everything I have
    is for wounds...the only medicine I have is bute.

    I only have bute and wound treatments also. It is all I have ever
    needed, anyother problems I would want the vet to look at ASAP.
    I do keep a bottle of mineral oil on hand, as my vet recommended
    it in case of colic, to help until he can get there. It has never
    been opened in 5 years. Because your filly is young 6 months, and
    pnemonia is a leading case of dead in babies, I would call the vet
    without delay.

1128.2We have it too...DELNI::KEIRANFri Nov 17 1989 13:2212
    Hi Nancy,

    My filly and the colt she is with both have colds. The other horses
    in the barn picked up a runny nose and cough at the track, and
    consequently, the babies got it too. He has a pretty good cough and
    she has runny eyes. My vet said to take their temps and if they were
    running a fever we would treat them, if not to let it run its course.
    Their temps were both normal so we are keeping a close eye on them to
    make sure they stay on their feed. They just had their shots about
    2 months ago so that has probably prevented them from getting a more
    severe cold. Just keep an eye on her and ask your vet what he
    suggests.
1128.3I've been through it, also.DNEAST::KRAMER_JULIEFri Nov 17 1989 14:0810
    My 6 month old colt also had a cold with a runny nose and a
    slight cough. I had the vet over to see if he needed a shot
    but the vet said to let it run its course. She said it was
    better for my colt to fight it off himself. I was told to
    keep an eye out and watch his stuffiness. It took a long while
    for it to run its course but he is much better now.

    Hope this helps.

1128.4Progress report...sick filly keeps spirits high!WEDOIT::NANCYTue Nov 28 1989 09:4216

    The Vet came to see the filly and prescribed antibiotics for her.
    After a week there has been NO IMPROVEMENT to her pneumonia. He
    took a blood sample yesterday and wants to do a tracheal wash if
    the white count is elevated, otherwise wait another week to see
    if the antibiotics do their job. The procedure he wants to do
    involves shaving the neck, making a hole in it, and inserting
    a tube to withdraw the fluid in the lungs to find out what virus/
    bacteria is actually causing her problem. The Vet says he is not
    worried right now...but would have liked to see some improvement
    in her congestion. He did say I caught it early and she hasn't
    gotten any worse...crossing my fingers. She's such a perky little
    filly..she makes you smile..she's full of energy and doesn't act
    sick, in the end she seems to be MY BEST MEDICINE..you can't beat
    owning horses, they return soooo much to you!!
