1113.0. "Walter Farley " by GENRAL::LEECH (Pat Leech CX01/02 DTN 522-6044) Thu Nov 02 1989 13:22

    From the Blood Horse, dated Oct. 28, 1989

      Walter Farley, 74, died on Oct. 17 of heart failure in Venice,
    Florida. He is survived by his widow, Rosemary; a daughter, Alice,
    of New York City; and two sons, Steve, of New York City, and Tim, of
    Los Angeles, California.

      From Syracuse, New York, Farley was 11 when he wrote his first story
    about horses. While in high school, he began writing The Black
    Stallion, a story about a boy and his adventures with a black Arabian
    stallion. The book was publised in 1941, while Farley was attending
    Columbia University, and 38 years later became the first of two of his
    novels to be made into movies. More than 12 million of Farley's books
    have been sold in in some 14 countries.

1113.1One of my favoritesTOOK::SCHLENERThu Nov 02 1989 15:528
    I used to read all the Black Stallion books when I was younger. One of
    my favorites was the one where Alex looses his memory out west (I
    forget if it was because of a plane accident) and Black is running
    loose like a mustang.
    The end, of course, ends with a horse race.
    I forget the name of the book but I did like it.

    I believe the name of that book is the Black Stallion Mystery.
    I really enjoyed that one also. It was from a plane accident.

    I'm really sad to here this. I grew up reading the Black Stallion and
    Island Stallion books over and over and over... My husband went out a
    few years ago and bought all of his books in paperback. We've been
    rereading them, but there were a few which were new for us and we
    really enjoyed reading the new ones - Alec finally grows up some and
    even falls in love with a girl who actually rides the Black in a race.

    Re .1. Confession from a Black Stallion book reader. The title was
    The Black Stallion Rebels. Alec got amnesia and the Black got loose as
    a result of a plane crash. How did they get on the plane in the first
    place? Well, back on the NH ranch, the Black got itchy with all this
    good domestic behavior, did some naughty deeds and they decided he
    needed a break on a ranch with lots of freedom. So Alec and the horse
    got on a plane to go west...

    I wish I could remember what happened at my last DEC meeting as well as
    I can remember the plots of the Black Stallion books...
