1104.0. "Sad Poem" by FLOWER::PIERCE () Wed Oct 18 1989 16:57
I was going throught some old boxes and I came accross
a pome witten in 1979 about some race horses that died
in a barn fire..In Marlboro, Mass..it is a lovely pome
and I just wanted to share it with you.
IN MEMORY OF THE FIVE HARNESS RACE HORSES
PERISHED ON JUNE 24, 1979 IN A BARN FIRE
IT'S A BIT LONELY HERE AT THE PARK
As I was led out to the track,
I paused a moment to look back.
It's a bit lonely here at the park,
Even more Lonely, just before dark.
Five of my friends have all died,
ROCK MAPEL REBEL, CASEYS' PRIDE,
and DOC'S LADY, and lucky bid,
TRANQUIL LINDY, and GRINGO KID.
Out to the paddock, just before two,
My life was spared and my partner's too.
Out owner was sad, but gald we did'nt die,
Sadi they've gone to greener pastures in the sky.
We all have that "certain" race to run.
Did anyone here THEIR starting-gate gun?
At the finishing line, how I miss my friend!
Why did THEIR lives ever have to end?
It's a bit lonely here at the park,
Even more lonely -- Just befor dark.

| Great poem....I remember that fire. I live in Southboro and use
to ride to the track all the time as a kid on my horse.
It was a very sad time...but them any fire that takes any trapped
animals life or humans life if sad.

Thank you!! thats a great poem. Tranquil Lindy was one
of my family's horses. I'm really touched....
My mom still has pictures in our den of my brother (then
about 5 years old holding lindy on a lead. Lindy sorta
had his head on my brothers shoulder, being a slouch)

1104.3 | Marlboro Trotting Park?? | TYCOBB::RUSSAU | | Tue Oct 24 1989 16:53 | 13 |
| I'm interested to hear more about this fire. Was it at the old
Marlboro Trotting Park? Is that the one kind of behind the Registry
on Rt. 85?
There is a new barn there now with an indoor ring and teaching hunt
seat lessons. I had heard about 2 barns that stood in the same
spot as the new one which had been hit by lightning and burned.
No one really talks about it much, but I would be interested in
hearing the whole story.
Thanks for the information.

>>>YAH! RIGHT! Try 2 teenagers. (15/16 years old!) The only
>>>lightning around was these jerks and their lighters.
>>>It was about 70 degrees out that day and blue skies.
>>>There was 1 barn there with 8 or 10 stalls. cement walls
>>>wooden roof. The new indoor riding right is right over the
>>>old site.
>>>In a reply to the note about the new riding center
>>>I a copy of the reply I had typed about that day.
