116.0. "Connemaras" by GRANMA::JWOOD () Fri Sep 08 1989 17:45

    We just purchased a gorgeous part Connemara from the sister of a
    fellow noter. She is a 14.1 black bay with four white stockings.
    Her previous owner was speculating that she was part Pinto and part
    Connemara. Does anybody have any clues what we should look for
    in trying to guess her breeding (we're just curious). She will
    be used for 4H Pony Club and general pleasure riding on trails and
    in the ring so breeding isn't an issue, but we'd like to know how
    to tell.

    Thanks for any advice.

116.1Typical paint/pinto characteristicsEPIK::DANIMon Sep 11 1989 11:3718
Some typical Pinto color characteristics that might show through on a
solid colored horse would be belly spots.

Does the horse have a facial white? If so some pintos have what looks to be
smaller white or colred circles that help to define the facial markings. In
particular I know one horse that looks to have a question mark on his fore
head because of a dark circle that forms inside of the upper section.

How about white under the chin/jaw?

How high up does the white on the legs go? Pinto backgrounds can lead to
solid horses with with that goes higher that the knee/hock. Also unusual
white marking on the legs (like a white only on the inside of a leg).

Can't think of any others.

Thanks for the Pinto characteristics. She has some, but not others.
    Her front stockings are just above the knee and her rear stockings
    are about halfway up to her hocks. She has a small white spot on
    her left side at the withers and some splashes of white. Her head,
    neck, and chest are completely black. She has a delicate face,
    fairly thin mane and tail, and is long-legged for her overall size.

    It sounds like the Pinto background could be correct. What do you
    think about the Connemara possibilities?

116.3Does sound like there's Pinto somewhereEPIK::DANITue Sep 12 1989 10:0211
Pinto background does sound like it's there. I don't know about Connemara
characteristic except that the Pinto organization classifies Connemara
ponies as hunter type. That means more or less looking like a little
thoroughbred. I do know that they don't have the think manes of the Welsh
ponies, and tend to have real nice head and face shapes. Their body
proportions also tend to be more like a horses than a ponies.

From what you've said, it Connemara is likely in the background.

Your critter must be *very* attractive!

    Thanks again, from the descriptions I'd say that she is exactly
    as advertised. Her proportions and other characteristics sound
    just as you stated.

    I'm convinced! And, she is a beauty!
