355.1 | Connemara questions... | USWAV1::COBURN | | Wed Jun 07 1989 10:09 | 15 |
| I think it depends on the shows you do. I show a 14.3 Standardbred
mare, and it is never questioned that she appears awfully small.
BUT, I only show her in small local shows, 4H stuff. I take her
in jumping classes as well as equitation, but not pleasure, she
is too hyper to pin well there...
I also show a Thoroughbred gelding who is 16.1 and looks it, but
I show him at ASHA rated shows and they are VERY picky about all
sorts of things! There you may be questioned...
Good luck, I used to ride a Connemara years ago, she was wonderful!

I would check the AHSA rule book for rules specific to the classes you
wish to compete in. For breeds which tend to have many individuals
14.2 or under, the rules vary from general AHSA rules (Connemaras,
Arabians, and Morgans to name a few). And not all Connemaras are 14.2
or under.
Also, there is a division called Adult Amateur Hunter which in most
zones allows adults riding ponies.
In addition, most local shows tend to not be restrictive regarding
adults riding "ponies" in open classes. Usually if there is a
restriction, it is for classes open only to ponies.

| As a rider of a 14 hand "pony" the only restriction I have met is
that I must show in horse classes not against other ponies. The
pony classes in my area also have a rider age limit of 17 years.
Moonshine doesn't care, he enjoys showing the big guys how its done.

| The rules here in Ireland are that "Seniors" ie. over 17 years old,
cannot show a pony, however because the Connemara is a native breed
in Ireland then the showing of a Connemara by a Senior is permissable.
Possibly this is the same rule with your native breeds.
