Don't jump the gun. Many people use different inventions
for combatting the bug problems New England is so famous for.
There are all sorts of different types of ear/face protectors.
Some of them would make the horse look like they are blindfolded,
but in actuality the material used is a thin light mesh. Some just
cover the ears, others are strips that hang over the face, another
is a full ear and face cover that ties on just like a "bonnet".
If the bugs were at my horses head I"d use them too, unfortunately
they seem to go for the chest, elbow area and sheath.

I *would* call Society of Cruelty to Animals, it does sound like
like a heartless thing to do with an animal.

I use the fly mask for my horses, they really work well. So don't
worry the horses aren't being blindfolded, just the opposite the
owners are caring enough to make the horse a little more comfortable.
I also live in Upton but they couldn't have been my horses my place
is set back off the road.
It is nice to see that there are people that are concerned!! Keep
up the good work.

| I must admit, some of the "fly" preventive gear looks really funny.
For deer flies, (since I always forget to buy him the strips that
hang down) I just stick branches through his bridle. It looks like
he's being fanned.
Another thing I do, is smear vaseline around his eyes. Evidently the
flies realize that they don't like that stuff and stay away from it.
Jasper doesn't seem to have a problem with the vaseline running into
his eyes.

Lynne-
If you read the previous note, you would have realized that it is
a fly mask. My horses are in Upton, and they all wear it. It keeps
the flys out of their eyes - and infections down (have you ever
seen the vet flush the tear duct because of fly crap in their eyes?).

I am not all that familiar with Upton, seeing I just moved my kritters
there. But the back yard, of the house I board at, is in Upton State
Forest. I think the street is Westboro rd, but it is across from
Cindy Brown's farm (can't miss hers). The barn is hidden in the
trees, so you can't see it from the road unless you're really looking
for it.
Where is Elm St? Do you ride in the Forest alot (I might have already
run into you and not known it ;^) )? My boyfriend does not ride
as much as I do, so I ride alone alot (actually it's real nice),
but tend to stay out of the forest....

| I used to live in West Upton and would ride my horse Jasper from Eagle
Rock Stables (Rt. 122 - Grafton) to the Upton State Forest. I also did
alot of X-country skiing there.
I definitely recommend riding there. There are alot of nice trails
(note: the gas line trail heading east ends at the new
development by the two nurseries on the top of the hill by the
Hopkinton Industrial Park).
I've entered the park 2 ways: by the high tension wires that cross
Westboro Rd, or off the road that connects W. Upton with 495. There's
a church and then right past it is a dirt road that goes under
the high tension wires.
Have fun and definitely visit the park!

Elm Ste is not too far from Westboro Road, as a matter of fact we
cross over Westboron Road sometimes when we ride the power lines
over to Mechanic Street. Give me a call sometime and we can meet
and ride, my husband and I alsways ride on Sunday mornings, we also
meet some other people a lot and ride together. My # is 529-3443,
best time to call is after 6:00 in the evenings. If we ride in
the morning we usually go our aroung 9:00.

Could also be that the horses in question are very skittish? Same
principle as blinders for horses that can't abide sudden movement
at the edge of their vision...
I heard that if you want to move a horse out of a burning barn you
have to cover their heads in order to lead them. They freeze in
certain stressful situations and won't move....
I agree that this sounds like a mean way to get the animal to do
what you want it too...but maybe they had no choice?
Only a hypothesis....
