| | Hi Lynne,

As a matter of fact, I just came back from Florida and passed through
Old Town, Fla., near St Cloud. There was a restored carousel there
that was built in the early 1900's I believe. The restoration was
exceptional! The horses were painted in beautiful bold colors and
    they had long flowing tails.
I still have the flyer on it that gives its' history. I'll
    mail it to you tomorrow.

    Tina,
Have you ever seen the carrousel at Walt Disney World?? I thought
it was one of the most beautiful examples that I have ever seen.
All the horses are painted white, and the saddles are brilliant
colors. It was built in 1912, and had mostly stationary horses
and a few jumpers. When Disney purchased it, they rearranged the
legs on all the stationary horses, so all of them would move up
and down, and also added some additional horses that are made out
of fiberglass. It is really a beauty, if you are ever in Walt
Disney World, make sure you check it out.

    Lynne :-)

| | yes, They have a magical power to them and I love the history behind
them. My sons lamp in his room is a ceramic one that I painted
for him. Does anyone remember when Paragon Park at Nantasket beach
(I think I got the names correct) was being closed down, and they
were auctioning off the rides. Originally they were going to sell
the horses on the carousel seperate, but I believe someone bought
it as a whole unit. Is this correct? I wanted one horse for my
living room in the worst way, but the prices were definitely for
collectors only. I grew up with the one at Whalom Park in Lunenburg
Mass. It was still in pretty good shape the last time I saw it.

the real thing that I will keep.

Regarding the rides, have any of you seen the carousel at Oak Bluffs
on the Vineyard, Its gorgeous!! Another great one is at Seaside
    Park NJ.

I've spent many summers in the Nantasket area (Hull, MA) and
I even worked for the guyes who owned the consessions and
watersildes. I know they sold the slide (That was a fun place to
work.....free rides!!!) but I think they still own "carousel", the
Icecream stand that was in the park.
When I was down last summer, Carousel was still there....and the
Carousel for the park was moved right next to it. And there was
a wedding reception going on inside the carousel ( excellent idea
    	for Carousel Horse fans).
Because of this I was not able to check it out (I don't know if it works
or if it is a stationary type setup). I have seen the guyes I used
to work for still down there so I (wild guess) think they might still
own the icecream stand and I think they might have bought the Carousel
	too...nice advertising/gimick for Carousel.... ;^)

| | Hi,

Did anyone see the Miller's xmas catalog with the life size carousel
horses you could buy - I believe the prices were between $1200 - $2500.
Well anyway - my mother made me one. She bought an old childs jumping
horse (you know the kind on springs), she sanded it down and painted
it. She had some kind of painter's magazine that showed the project.
After it was painted you drill a hole up through the middle and put
a brass or whatever you want pole with a stand on the bottom.

At a restaurant in Fitchburg, MA - a place called Pub Dennis the
whole interior is decorated with the carousel horse theme. Mounted
between the booths they have the painted and decorated horses
(some are decorated a little tacky). Throughout the restaurant there
are pictures of carousel horses. It is also a very reasonable place
to eat out - good food and prices.

| | Hello!
I remember very well the Paragon Carrousel, it was fabulus! I remember
a few years back watching the news and they showed the carrousel
up for auction. I was hoping they would not dismantle it to sell
the horses seprately, and was really happy to see that they kept
it intact. I love the Whalom Park Carrousel, which was recently
restored about nine years ago...it's an oldie that was built around
    1900.

Two other beautiful carrousels in the area are at Rocky Point in
Rhode Island which is made up of all animals and a handful of horses.

Another is at Riverside Park in Agawam, the horses are outstanding
carved, but it needs a restoration job.

I am glad to see there are other people who enjoy the art!

    Lynne :-)

Lenox has a lovely carousel that I just ordered. It is a horse with
decorations of beautiful flowers and ribbons in it's mane. A friend of
mine has one and it is beautiful. The cost is $17.00 in 8 monthly
installments and a relatively cost effective way to begin collecting..
compared with the real thing. I'm becoming interested in collecting
horse carousels because of this piece.

Nancy I seen the Lenox carrousel horse in a magazine, it is absolutley
adorable! If you are interested in other carrousel figurines, there
is the American Carrousel Collection by Tobin Fraley. They are
limited edition pieces that have a coin on the base telling what
number in the edition they are in, and have a stamped Fraley signature
on the underside of the animal. I already have two, an armored horse
with a colorful blanket, and a lovely white one. They are really
authentic looking and are copies of original carvings. They range
in price from $40.00 to $90.00 for a horse that is mounted on a
music box and goes up and down when it is played. They also have
a full carrousel with four porcelain horses that is very expensive.
They are really nice figurines to collect.

I live in Massachusetts and I found the Fraley Collection at the
Shropshire Curiosity Shop I & II in Shrewsbury, also Noah's at
Pheasant Lane Mall in NH has an extensive selection of them.
They are very authentic looking, they are copies of the real carvings.
You can see many of the horses (the real thing) in Tobin Fraley's
book "The Carrousel Animal" which many of the figurines are modeled
after. These pieces increase in value since there is only a certain
amount of each piece made. I think they are great for any carrousel
fan, since purchasing a authentic hand carved figure can cost as
much as a down payment on a house :-) or maybe a new Mercedes :-)
Personally I think they are great!

was really colorful...did anybody else check it out???

| | There is a beautiful carousel at the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne
Vermont. Not sure if it still works, but it is beautifully restored.
Very colorful... Shelburne Museum also has a 'circus collection'
that is great. Dozens (maybe hundreds) of carved animals - horses,
elephants, etc... along with carriages and other props. These are
small (less than 1 foot tall) peices that circuses used to send
around in advance of the show to drum up interest in the show.

    Lynne-
You're right more replies in here than in Anitque_collectible!
Lynne and I have been having our own conference via mail, it's nice
to know others are into Carousel Art like we are. I have been
collecting Carousel Music boxes and figurines for 8 yrs. I had a
circa 1900 Norton Evans Tonawanda Style horse, the Co. is one of
the articles in the book Painted Ponies, and there is a picture
on page 46 (I think) of the style of horse I had. I just started
the Franklin Mint Carousel Collection and I love my first horse,
it's the Illions Rose Horse. I also do a lot of craft projects
involving Carousel Horses and have 4 of the larger wonder horse
type in production. I love the Carousels in upstate NY and in Colo.
believe it or not we have 4 working Carousels.. the one in Elitch
Gardens is where we have our Dec. picnic soooo I get to ride all
I can! If you get into MOMAX::ANTIQUE_COLLECTIBLE you can get the
address for the Carousel News/trader magazine it's a monthly
publication and a good source of information.

Also if you East Coasters get up to the Binghamton area there are
several working restored Carousels made by Allen Herschell.
One of them is in the Ross Park Zoo and my mom and my grandma used
to ride on that, the Ross Park one still costs a penney and the
    others are free.
When we are finished with our reproduction horses and other craft
items I'll take pictures and send them to anyone that is interested
also they will be for sale if anyone is interested.
You can buy the Tobin Fraley Collection from JC Penney stores.
Montgomery Wards sells figures and music boxes, also some of the
    Hallmark stores carry Carousel items.
