821.0. "What is Hunt Seat? Eventing?" by JULIET::APODACA_KI (Hey, buddy....got a quarter?) Thu Jan 19 1989 19:53

For a no-brainer like me, what's the diff. between a hunt seat and
    say...eventing? I know in 3-day events, you jump a lot--is hunt
seat English style but without jumping?

    Thanks much!

Well, since no one has answered your question - I will take a stab
at this one - (even if all it does is start an "open discussion" -
which is good :^).

	3 day/2 phase/hunters/jumpers/dressage are all "english".

3 day eventing is a specialized sport whereby the horse is trained
to compete in a dressage test, a cross country (endurance) phase, and a
show jumping phase. (This is discussed somewhere in the file - can't
remember where). The horse is challenged mentally and physically throughout
this type of competition since this training has many areas of concentration.
(Notice I used the term "phase" - sometimes events for combined training are
limited to dressage tests and jumping and may all take place in one day of
competition which are called 2-phase events.)

The term "Hunter" describes the sport and riding styles associated
with Fox Hunting. At shows, the hunter/jumper judge looks for specific
characteristics in the way the horse moves, jumps, and behaves to determine
if he is suited for this activity. In an actual Fox Hunt - the horse would
be expected to work well with hounds, carefully jump all sorts of natural
jumps and hazards, and generally behave in the company of many other horses.
There's an entire philosophy on Hunt seat or Forward Seat riding, but in my
opinion, the style of riding over fences is pretty much the same - the rider
is either good or bad ;^).

Then there's another competition called a Hunter Pace Event and I
have no idea what variation this is...
