807.0. "Holes in hoof" by WMOIS::J_BENNETT (constants aren't; variables won't) Tue Dec 27 1988 13:57

	Would anyone have some idea as to what causes holes on the outside
wall of the hoof?

 	I have noticed this condition on two different horses and am
wondering what on earth it's caused by. The holes actually look like puncture
wounds going right through the outside hoof wall, above the nail holes. It
looks as though the holes are growing out - could it be the results of an
injury to the coronary band? Both these horses seemed to have very dry feet.

Thanks!

    We have had horses get sand abcesses (gravel pockets) that have
    come through the coronet band and break. Then as the hoof grows
    so goes the location of the hole.
    These horses have not had particularly dry feet....normal as far
    as I am concerned.
    The cause of the abcess in these cases was due to small grains of
    sand working their way into the sole of the foot, the foot growing
    over, abcess forming and working its way out at the coronet band.
    Not all come out at the coronet band. Many times a good farrier
    can find them still reachable from the bottom of the foot and can
    dig them out.

    There are probably others who can give you a more detailed picture.
    This is from my experience only.

807.2Arabians with sand problems?KOAL::AIKENArabian Horse Breeder DTN378-6706Wed Jan 04 1989 10:098
    Cathy, this is interesting. I thought (MYTH #1) that Arabians'
    feet were constructed in such an evolutionary way that sand was
    never a problem. You know, the desert and all that.

    Maybe our non-desert Arabians have evolved differently? Short time
    for that, though.
