737.0. "Visiting Australia" by SMAUG::GUNN () Thu Sep 29 1988 18:52

I may have to go to Sydney, Australia, in November. Are there any
Aussies reading this file or anyone else who knows what riding is
available in that area? I won't have more than a day or two so treks
    in the outback are out.

Last but not least, when you want to have a trot through Centennial
Park you can book an hour ride (escorted) on one of the school horses
at Centennial Park Horse Hire. A$12/hour. Make sure you make your
level of expertise known. By default they put strangers on the
slowest, sleepiest, and most stubborn animals.

Next door to CP Horse Hire is Blue Ribbon. Same stuff, but I've never
ridden with them.

Horse Riding in the "high country"

3 to 9 days from Mansfield, Victoria. Lodge Hut or tent accomodation
(15-20 members). I assume you have to find your own transport to
Mansfield (north east of M'bne).

"Your horse is handpicked and sturdy enough to handle the rugged
mountain tracks. Everything is provided on the trail rides except
sleeping bags and wet weather gear, which can be hired. On longer
rides camping out is either in tents or in the Stoney family's genuine
cattlemans hut at an altitude of 5200 feet.

These rides follow the Upper Howqua Valley, crossing the Howqua River
many times before climbing Bluff Hut. The rest of the trip will be
spent exploring the High Plains out to the Great Divide and on some
trips moving and inspecting cattle on the bluff cattle leases."

[brochure reprinted without permission - ed.]

Adventure holiday on horseback. Ride the old cattlemen's tracks of
the outer Blue Mountains with licensed guides.
Join the "Mountain River Riders" on a qulaity, well planned, all
inclusive VIP trip into the remote areas of the Blue Mountains
National Park.

Be guided on our "4leg drive" tour - a 2-6 day trek with packhorses
deep into this "3 rivers" system, spanning 3 shires and a million
years.

Go on horseback to our two privately owned "old time" cattlemen's
selections with all the gear on packhorses - "the cargo carriers of
the high country".

Here, deep in the outer Blue Mountains, beyond the last road, is the
"time-lapsed" 1862 "Koonangaroo" selectin on a beautiful river
junction. This is the last of the "outer area" supply and remount
depots - with its yards, horse paddocks, and rustic huts.

Here, a day's ride away from our crazy world, is the real door to an
unchanged Australia of many years ago. See a part of Australia's zoo
unhindered by cages.

Stay overnight on a leisure weekend - ride, a quiet river junction to
swim, explore, walk, read, photograph, paint and for the enthusiast, a
fishing utopia.

For those on a longer stay there are different river rides - to cedar
forest, a silmer mine, old yards, plaques, canyons, trout pools - a
place of enjoyment rather than endurance.

Trips are all inclusive - everything, within reason [no disco - ed.],
is provided for your comfort, enjoyment and safety. With an initial
"main line" network of over 150 kms of bridle tracks - all trips are
tailor made to the outdoor needs, ability and wishes of individuals
and parties.

Parties are usually kept small to fully savour the area's unhurried
and primitive life style. Approx. 6-8 riders, 2 guides and several
packhorses. Little experience is needed - what helps is a love of
animals and the outdoors, lots of enthusiasm, some common sense and a
tone of good humour.

Trips leave at weekends and at all other times by prior arrangement.

Our Cox's River departure point, "River Downs", near the edge of the
Blue Mountains National Park, is only a couple of hours drive, or 1/2
hour by helicopter frm the Sydney perimeter.

We are licensed by the National Parks & Widlife Services for an "old
fashioned" packhorse trip into this "beyond" country.

[etc. marketing blather - ed.]
------------------------------------------
I think the day trip was about A$50. The long trips run about
A$75/day. Call or write to get the scoop. It was a wonderful trip (I
did a one day ride) and I highly recommend them.

Look at the entries in Note 737 and in the QUOKKA::OZ Notesfile.
Be warned that this OZ Notesfile is somewhat rowdy, typical of down
under. I did ride once while I was in Australia last November, but
I only had a week. I didn't find any DEC Australia folk who rode,
but if you look way back in this Notesfile there were one or two
    entries from down under.

Some horse terminology in Australia is unique, neither US nor British,
so be prepared to ask or explain if you don't understand or get
    blank stares in a conversation.
737.5Riding in Australia ?ESSB::KENNEDYMoggey BasherTue Sep 10 1991 05:3510
Hi
I am moving to Australia (Melbourne) in 1992 and am interested in finding out
about horse riding facilities there. I live in Ireland (Galway) and have access
to excellent horses for Hunting, hacking, jumping etc. Is it possible to
join a riding club in Melbourne and compete with the club, or is it mandatory
to own your own horse. If so what are prices like, is there fox hunting in
Aussi, what are the average Livery costs. I would be greatful of any info.
thanks in advance
