660.0. "Smoke Damage?" by HERMES::WELSH () Tue Jul 19 1988 17:23
Any ideas on how to clean smoke damaged leather?
We had a fire in our barn last weekend from a lightening storm,
and my nice (and very expensive!) Western show saddle with lots
of hand tooling reeks with smoke!!
I tried cleaning with saddle soap, which helped, but I cans still
smell smoke. The insurance people said to leave it in the barn
when we have it disinfected, but I'm worried about what the chemicals
will do to the leather.
The only good news from the fire, is that there were no animals
in the barn, no one got hurt and the fire damage could have been
ALOT worse!!!
Thanks.
Kathy

| I don't know how to clean the smokey smell, but I'm curious about
whether you have lightening rods. Many people around here (Maryland)
have put them in. I just wondered how well they work.

The barn was supposedly grounded! The fire department and the
insurance inspector think that somehow it shorted over to a metal
door that was leaning against the wall because the door has a large
melted area right where the hole in the wall was. I guess we'll
never know...
