| Meadow View Farms on East Broadway in Haverhill Ma, held some
reining events last year, I don't know if they have held any this
year. The owner/trainer at Meadow View is Ernie Sheltry, sorry
I don't have his telephone number.

Yes, there are numerous events that include reining in the area.
There are different organizations that hold their own events, such
as the Northeast Reining Horse Assoc. etc.. If you would like more
info on such events your best bet would be to contact Bob Cunningham
in Uxbridge, MA, Ernie Sheltry as previously mentioned or Tom McDowell
in Concord, NH. Anyone of these people I'm sure would be glad to
offer the information you seek. Good luck.

| Re: .2
Helen, reining is a formal routine performed in a ring to demonstrate
the ability of horse and rider to go through tight maneuvers usually
associated with cowboys herding cattle.
The program consists of pivoting to the left four times, to the right
four times, galloping clockwise, cantering clockwise, then counter-
clockwise, and three sliding stops from a gallop, which I believe
are called roll-backs because the horse rolls way back on his hind
legs and slides to a stop.

641.6 | Reining is great! | GENRAL::BOURBEAU | | Wed Jul 06 1988 16:33 | 12 |
| re. .4 rollbacks are a little more than slide stops, they consist
of a slid stop from a lope,and a simultaneous 180 degree turn,the
horse coming back out of the turn at a lope. That is aslide stop/turn
and back in the original direction.
Also there are many different reining patterns of various degrees
of difficulty. These competitions really show off a horse's athletic
abilities,as well as the riders. It's really a thrill to see a horse
that can do a rollback, then go into a clockwise spin on his hind
end, and quickly switching to a counter clockwise spin.

| Yeah, and throwing a perfect "11" gets the crowd going, too. An
"11" is the set of marks made in the arena dirt after a horse makes
a long sliding stop. Done well, it's a real turn-on!
