790.0. "Horses in Bavaria?" by SMAUG::GUNN () Mon May 30 1988 20:05

    I am off on my travels for DEC again, this time to Munich, in Southern
    Germany. I haven't been there before. Does anybody have any suggestions
    as to places or events of equestrian interest around there? I'll
    be taking a few days vacation after I have done my business around
    June 18th.

790.1Arabian stud farms????KOAL::AIKENArabian Horse Breeder DTN378-6706Thu Jun 02 1988 14:059
    I don't know where your interests lie, but if it's in Arabians,
    there are a few BIG stud farms in that area. I'm sorry I don't
    have addresses to give you, but if you look in the April-June issues
    of the Arabian Horse World, there are stories about those stud farms.

    I'm sure you can find some Trakhener or Hanoverian farms somewhere
    close. You might check some of the breed magazines, or a magazine
    about dressage. Or call the USET, or George Morris in New Jersey
    (I think).
790.2Not many horses in Bavaria!FORTY2::GUNNMon Jun 20 1988 14:5426
    Now I am part way back from Munich, and I have to say I didn't see
    many horses in Bavaria. According to the DEC folk I was visiting,
    riding in Germany is "for the rich" and so I would not be able to
    find the kind of stable that there are in the US or the UK that
    anybody could go to to learn to ride. In travelling around by train
    and car I saw very few horses in the countryside, far fewer than
    a casual observer would see on similar journeys in the UK.

    In the Munich "Yellow Pages", only two riding schools were listed
    along with half a dozen tack shops. My German is very limited so
    more may have been listed under a different heading unknown to me.
    I found a couple of the tack shops which were very expensive. I
    looked at riding britches with full leather seats - DM 340 or US
    $200 - I don't need them that much! I did get several German Riding
    Magazines which seem to be targetted towards the affluent like the
    late and not-so-lamented "Classic" in the US.

    On a side trip to Salzburg in Austria, I found you can get carriage
    tours of part of the town for the equivalent of US $20 for 25 minutes.
    Coincidentally, the same price is charged by the carriages in
    Cincinnati when I was there for DECUS last month. However, Salzburg
    is infinitely more attractive.

    Now I am in Reading in the UK for ten days and am much more familiar
    with things equestrian. So I am off to the paper shop to get the latest
    issue of "Horse and Hound".
790.3There is riding in Bavaria!DCC::HERRINGWed Oct 12 1988 10:2334
    I hope that you are still reading this note.

    I read your response to your own note after you left Germany and
    was quite surprised of your findings here in Munich.

    I was unfortunately away on business from Late June until last week
    and was not here to help.

    Munich is wonderful for riding. And it is not only for the rich.

    First, I have two horses in a New stall 10 Km South from Munich
    with an outside spring place and 40 X 20 Meter Halle.

    The riding in the counrty side is unlimited and I have gone as
    far as 25 KM towards the Amersee (lake) with out traveling on (but
    crossing ) Highways.

    Admittedly, there are not many riders at Digital Munich, but
    I know of at 8 stables where visitors can ride.

    And riders here are not baby sitted like in the States.

    last January, when I first arrived, I put a note on the local
    Munich Notes file for information about riding. I received several
    responses, but one in particular was fantastic. The ride school
    leader took a small group of people on a three hour ride and gallop
    across snow covered Bavarian country side.

    If you find yourself here again, please look me up.
    Also, there is a local notes file that would access more people
    than the equestrian notes file.

790.4Riding in Bavaria, it is cheaper than you think!FORTY2::GOETZMAIL Interchange Group, Reading/UKWed Aug 03 1994 12:5121
	Hello,

	having grown up in Bavaria myself and never having had riding lessons
	(my parents quoted exactly those reasons: too expensive, reserved
	for the rich), I was suprised to find that riding lessons are MUCH
	cheaper in Germany than they are here in the UK (where I now live and
	have had riding lessons for over a year).

	My individual lessons here in the UK cost 18. A very reputable
	riding school near Wrzburg quoted me DM 25 (about 10). I'll be
	having a few lessons there next week !!

	The price for a semi-private lesson at the stables in Dirnismaning
	near Munich is DM 27.

	My parents were lying... :-)

    Count your blessing! Last time I looked at the exchange rates, 18 was
    about $27(US). My last private lesson was $40. And the riding school
    near Wrzburg is giving private lessons for $15?

    Where's my passport? Call the travel agent! Is von Neindorf still
    alive?

	Hello,

	I'll let you know how the lessons in Germany compare to the lessons
	I have here.

790.7Riding near FrankfurtFSAEUR::LOTHROPThu Aug 04 1994 06:3515
    I couldn't help but comment here - I too take lessons here in Germany
    on a regular basis.

    I pay 40DM for a *half-hour* private lesson! That may be where the
    differences are - the amount of time the instructor spends with you.
    Never in the two years that I've been here have I seen a private lesson
    go longer than a half-hour. Group lessons are hour-long sessions and
    cost 30DM. There is usually between 3-6 people in the group, and
    sometimes more.

    I live near Frankfurt, which is a fairly expensive place to live. When
    I compare what I pay for my riding lessons to, for example, what I pay
    for a few items at the grocery store, it's still pretty cheap!

790.8Didn't work out as plannedFORTY2::GOETZMAIL Interchange Group, Reading/UKMon Aug 15 1994 11:2716
	Hello,

	unfortunately I didn't get to go riding in Germany last week,
	as the teacher unexpectedly had to go away for most of the week.
	All other riding stables in the area ("All" should really be "The two")
	were fully booked due to the summer holidays.

	Ho hum. But as I am going to Anglesey (island off the coast of
	North Wales for non-UK noters) for a week's riding next week, I wasn't
	too disappointed. I have to add something about this place in the
	appropriate note when I come back. I've been there once before and it
	was superb!
