I am helping my 19 year-old daughter locate her childhood pony.
He was very sweet but when the time came for my daughter to
move to something larger, unfortunately I was financially unable
to keep a pony AND a horse.
I first found a home for the little guy but altho the people who
adopted him were quite wealthy, he was not treated well. So I
took him back. Later I got him a really good him down towards
the Cape, and after a few years I understand that he went to
another good home. The second owner has died, and I believe the
third owner has moved BUT I don't know to where or what happened
to the pony. We know that both owner #2 and #3 were very fond of
him - which is good news.
His description -
He was named Goliath and I believe he kept that name.
He was a little Shetland, about 9 hands, blond mane and tail,
and dark brown/white pinto coloring (in certain seasons he looked
gray/white). The dark color was predominate to the white.
He would be approximately 22 years old, (not old for a Shetland),
and was well conformed.
The last I heard was that about 10 years ago he was being used as a cart
pony, and was going to rated shows, and I understand he was doing
quite well.
If he is alive he may still be living towards, but probably
not right on, Cape Cod.
Of course, if he is still alive, he is getting along in years.
All we want to know is that he is being treated well, and if
the owners want him to retire, we would be VERY happy to take
him back. Unlike 13 years ago, we can now offer him a large
pasture, with friends, and a good retirement. We still have the
horse, who will stay with us for his lifetime, as well.
Also, maybe if he is still alive, the current owners love him
and are providing well for him. That would certainly be great news.
Maybe Goliath has died and we would want to know that, too.
Oh well, if anyone knows anything about this little fellow, please
either give me a call at 282-1748 (that's the Westford facility),
or write to me at WJO::DALEY, or respond on the Notes file.
Both my daughter and I would be very grateful for any news.
Thanks,
Pat

Pat,
I will ask about Goliath at the New England Pinto general membership
meeting this Sunday.
Let you know what I find out.
Also, you could put an ad in the N.E.Pt.H.A. news letter.

| 439.2 | a description of Goliath | WBA::DALEY | Mon Nov 09 1987 14:18 | 54 | |
I have worked up a description of Goliath for anyone who
may have seen him-
GELDING, SHETLAND, NOT REGISTERED
AGE - about 22 years old
HEIGHT - 9 - 10 hands
FRONT LEGS - both right and left are white from the hoof to the
pastern
BACK LEGS - Facing pony - left rear leg is white from hoof to
sightly above hock
Right rear leg - white from hoof to half-way between pastern and
hock.
HIND QUARTERS - White rump
HEAD - Narrow white strip from slightly below eye level to end
of nose.
MANE, FORELOCK, TAIL - White and VERY thick
BARREL - Left side had small patch of white which would be partially
covered by a girth.
COLOR - a chocolate brown other than the white just described.
HOOFS - light colored
CONFORMATION - very well conformed. VERY hairy in winter if not
clipped.
Used as a pleasure pony, has been in Western pleasure classes, has
been show over obstacles in classes (competing against MUCH larger
ponies - remember Goliath is only 9 hands high at the withers),
has been shown in English pleasure classes, and as a cart pony in
shows, and of course in lead-line classes. [in the pleasure classes
and trail classes he was ridden by a VERY small 11 year old girl).
--------------
I want to thank the persons who have responded regarding him.
I will follow up on the leads.
Thanks again. I appeciate all the help.
Pat D.

Note 466.0 We found Goliath!!! 2 replies
PBA::DALEY 58 lines 3-DEC-1987 14:47
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After searching for over a year, we have finally located Goliath.
My daughter had been getting info on her own, and yesterday called
me from school saying she thought she had been given some strong
leads. She gave me three phone numbers belonging to people who
had owned a pony such as Goliath. So I called the first one and
hit the jackpot.
He is living with a family in Pembroke, who have two young children
ages 4 & 6 years. The woman who now owns him said he is loved and
well cared-for, however, his legs are getting sore. She was glad
and surprised that I called as she said she was wondering just
how old he really was since he appeared to be getting a little on
in years. When I asked if he still had the same name, she said
"Yes, and he has a nameplate, which came with him, on his stall door.
When she described it, I told her that was the one my daughter
had received on her 4th birthday a few months after she had gotten
Goliath. I was glad to hear it was going with him, wherever he went.
The lady said that as far as she was concerned he could have a home
with her forever, that whenever she got a pet she considered it a
lifetime deal. (He is a great deal like a pet slightly larger than
a Newfoundland dog). But I asked her to take my name and address
"just in case" which she did. She said she would send me a Christmas
photo of Goliath.
My daughter of course was delighted and intends to call the new
owner today and ask if she could go visit him - for old times sake.
(I think she also wants to see for herself that he is really okay).
Anyway, after a long conversation with his owner, I feel that he
is in good hands.
The only problem I have is a personal one - one I didn't think I
had until yesterday. I guess I really wanted him back with me.
Of course, I didn't say anything like that to the owner because
she seems to really love him and I would have been out of line.
I just told her the truth - that I couldn't have kept both him and a
horse 15 years ago and that I was concerned for his welfare as he
is getting old and that I would be glad to take him IF she could
no longer keep him. (I am probably feeling alot of nostalgia mixed
up in here somewhere and it's getting in the way of reality).
Realistically, if he is getting brushed (which he also loves - don't
they all??), and vet'd, and teeth floated, and good food, and
attention, I believe he is doing okay and I am really happy for
him. It sounds like a good place for the little guy to be.
I want to thank all the noters who helped us. It is good to know
you all are out there.
Pat

That's wonderful Pat...
It sounds like the perfect ending to the story. I can understand
your nostalgia - but commend you on your handling of the phone con
versation. Good to know he has so positivly touched so many folks
of all ages!

| 439.6 | IS IS GOLIATH ?? | AIMHI::OFFEN | Wed May 18 1988 19:51 | 10 | |
I drive through Pembroke every day and go by a place that has a
horse and a pony (just like you described). I'm wondering if that
is Goliath. I'm also glad you found him.
I had to give up to very loved animals once and often wonder where
they are and how they are being treated.
