416.0. "Leo is not a lion, but he roars" by CURIE::HERRING () Wed Sep 30 1987 08:38

    Does anyone out there is horsey land have any experience
    with Roarers ( horses with hemi paralysed larnyx ).

    How much can they be worked? Will they stay fit?

    Are they prone to lung infections???

    Are you familiar with the operation that removes the
    dead portion of the larnyx, and what is the success potential??

    Any experience in this area would help....

416.1should be able to be ridden normallyTOPDOC::NAJJARWed Sep 30 1987 10:1618
    Ed - Last fall I was riding a Hannov. gelding that had had
    the operation - I was working him an hour a day (dressage)
    and he didn't have any problems that we were aware of. He also lived
    outside - even in winter.

    A woman bought him with the intentions of eventing (eventually
    prelim.) She had a thorough vet check, and a scoping done
    on the horse, and the vet said that with the proper conditioning,
    the horse should be able to event with no problem, however, he
    didn't guarantee anything about how far the horse could go (ie.
    up to what levels he could be evented to).

    I don't know about the lung infections, but this horse was a 5 yo
    and had the operation as a 3 or 4 yo and hadn't had a problem after
    it. You may want to have your vet come and look at the horse, since
    there are varying degrees with this type of problem and only the
    vet will be able to tell you what you should and shouldn't do with
    your horse.
