407.1 | The horse will be OK but you may not be. | SMAUG::GUNN | Tue Sep 22 1987 16:03 | 12
While horses are not affected by poison ivy and can and do eat it, it can still have an effect on their owner/rider. The toxin in Poison Ivy that causes the skin rash in humans will be present in the horse's saliva and sweat after the horse has eaten the ivy. Therefore if you come into contact with the horse and you are sensitive to poison ivy you will come out with the rash. So it's probably a good idea for your own comfort rather than your horse's to keep your horse away from poison ivy. Incidentally, if you decide to eridicate the poison ivy with a chemical spray, don't let your horse near the area since those chemicals can be harmful to animals.

I see this is an old note.. but hopefully some of you will read it and have an answer! Is there something you can use on poison ivy to get rid of it, but have it not affect the horses? |
