If you were to have a horse vetted-out, and because of budget
limitations, you had to decide whether you would have a blood
test done to check for any drugs, etc. in the horse, or more
x-rays taken which would you do?
Assumptions:
1) you are buying from a farm that is strictly horse sales, and you
don't know them very well (although they seemed very nice and honest
- you never know)
2) the blood work costs $75, and x-rays are about $20 ea.
3) you are already having the vet do 4 x-rays of each front
foot
As an aside, how long can bute or other drugs stay in the horse's
system and continue its effectiveness (longer than 2 weeks)?

Dr. Lengel from AHSA (Drugs and Medication person) tells us in
stewards seminars that to be on the safe side regarding drug tests
at shows, that you should refrain from using ANY illegal drugs for
at least 7 days prior to the show.
He indicated that any testable drugs would not be detectable during
that time period.

I read an article in one of my horse mag. I can't remember which
one. The article said to have the vet draw blood during the vet
check. The vet should not test the blood, he should freeze it
and store it for you. If the horse goes lame or get sick a few
weeks after the purchase, then you spend the money to get the blood
tested. If the horse was drugged you can take legal actions against
the seller. If the horse is fine you save the money for the blood
test.

Mary Ann,
I really like that suggestion. I found out that Bute only remains
for 3 days in the horse's system, so that would be a good idea
if I can get the vet to agree to it (I don't see why he wouldn't).

Are you buying the horse for racing, hunting, or just pleasure?
Your vet should be able to tell you how long bute will stay in a
horses system. If this horse has ever raced I think you should
be very careful.

The horse never raced (not a TB), and Bute can stay in the system
for 3 days (I asked the vet). I am planning to use him for dressage,
eventing, trail riding, and driving. I had x-rays done, and had
the vet take a blood sample, but not test it yet. If I notice
any lameness or something unusual, I'll have the vet test the
blood for drugs (it's sort of my insurance, because I told the
owner that I was waiting for the results, and he said if anything
showed up, which it won't, that I could return the horse and get
my money back). This makes me assume that he is confident that
nothing will show up since he didn't give the horse anything.
