ALEZAN ARABIAN STUD
Cassie Parker
(603) 532-4338 (Jaffrey Center, NH)
B,T,S,I,BR,IN
I stopped by to visit this farm and found that their breeding program
is focused on Eqyptian bred Arabians (some of the stock for sale is listed
in #11). Cassie was very nice to talk to and made us feel quite welcome
as "visitors". She even brought some of the horses out of their stalls and
gave us a brief history of their lineage. She let my daughter be lead around
on an adorable 12.2 hand 1/2 Arab pony. I would recommend anyone to visit
this farm, which is located at the base of Mt. Monadnock where the scenery
is breathtaking! (I would also recommend that people call first to see if
Cassie is there - she told us that she is still moving stock from Vermont
and is on the road alot - we were fortunate with our timing).
(By the way - this is the "Kilkenny" farm I was questioning in another note.
The farm and property (which is a substantial piece of property) is still,
in fact, called Kilkenny and not to be confused with the farm in Mass.)
I also visited Windy Hill Andalusians and will update the Andalusian note.

brindle ledge is excellent.
the woman who gives lesson (eddie ) is so good.
i used to take jumping lessons, she watched me ride one of her horses,
took me off and put my on her horse.... shes also keep the barn
spotless. and the horses are in excellent condition.
dar=col stables, is good/ok i took me horse out cause i felt my
aqha mare wasnt getting enough weight on her (that was 4 years
ago.) and another aqha pulled out shortly after me.
darlene is a good trainer and used to give saddle seat lessons.
tom mcdowell has a barn for sales, training, i dont know if they
have boarding or not. horses are well cared for, i've had my mare
there for 3 1/2 years now.
tommy has indoor arena also.
as far as townsends, they are a bit pricey but look at the frills
you get.
the arena looks like a zoo sometimes, but its nice.
the people there are a little too... put it this way you run into
these poeple everywhere i guess.
mrs. townsend is very professional and pleasant.

Scotia Farm
Main Street (Rte. 113)
Dunstable, Mass.
(617) 649-9203
(Dunstable is located at the MA/NH border, just south of Nashua,
New Hampshire. Traveling time from Boston is about 35-40 minutes.
Scotia Farm is about 3 minutes from Route 3, Exit 35.)
As some of you already know, Cashel Farm in Dunstable, Mass. has
changed hands. The question of where to board frequently pops up, and
because a few people have asked me what's happening at Cashel (where I
board my horse), I thought I'd add this note now to fill you all in.
Actually, Cashel's moved to New Hampshire and changed its approach to
be more of a sales/training facility.
The old Cashel Farm is once again operating as a boarding facility,
under the new name of Scotia Farm. Stalls are available now, at the
same rate as before, which is $275. Board includes use of the indoor
ring, all-day turnout, feeding, mucking, etc. As I've been there a
few years now, I can personally attest to the fact that there are lots
of great trails around, many of which are better than the routes I've
traveled at pace events. The turnout area is real nice, too, with a
dressage ring and plenty of room for jumps. The total acreage is about
11, but it's all flat and usable.
Scotia Farm is owned by the Bentley family -- Allison Bentley is the
barn manager. Although it's been a short time since the new management
took over, the consensus among us remaining boarders is that the change
is a positive one. No major changes are planned, other than
improvements to the facility, and Allison has already demonstrated a
terrific cooperative attitude. This is always an important factor, as
far as I'm concerned. When the owners/managers are personable and fun
to work with, it makes the whole experience so much more rewarding.
They plan to offer lessons as soon as possible, and there will be
school horses, though the instructors are yet to be determined. Of
course, as boarders, we're free to invite whatever instructor we want.
A little background on Allison: She says she's worked in the horse
scene for 12 years, including 2 years of management experience at Dana
Hall Riding Center. She also ran a summer riding camp for boys.
Allison says she enjoys all facets of equitation, and her experience
includes the following:
o Harness driving
o Training (mainly thoroughbreds, also some warmbloods)
o Dressage and eventing (primarily)
o Four years hunter, jumper
o Competitive trail riding
Oh yeah, and Scotia Farm also features carriages for weddings!
For more info about the facility, including references, feel free to
call Allison. For that matter, I can supply the references; just send
me mail.

Does anyone have information on the stable in Hubbardston Mass? I
visited there about a year ago to watch someone ride. I can't remember
much about it (ie. name of farm, name of owner, etc.) but I do remember
it is owned by 2 women, the indoor arena is HUGE and fairly new - AND
they are very expensive (about $30 an hour). The instructor was not one
of the owners - she was in her 60's - and incredibly agressive.
I should take a ride out there and get more information - but until
I can - if anyone can tell me more I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,

horses are turned out every day, fed 3-4 times a day and stalls
cleaned at least 2 times a day. They have an indoor arena and there
are other people that ride. However, the board is probably somewhere
around $250 or so (it is a show/training/breeding barn). They have

<flame off>
As far as I know, there is no riding for the handicapped
program there. A few years ago, the mother of a blind girl came by
and inquired about lessons for her daughter. Stephie O'Connor said
that she didn't want the liability of being responsible for the
kid, since the ring is often a zoo, and it's hard enough trying to
ride your horse when you can SEE the other riders.
Adult shows are still done on rare occasions.
As far as lessons go, there is one regular teacher there, and a
couple of others that you *might* be able to get to teach you if
you ask. The regular, Andrea, teaches mostly beginners. I can find
out about others if you're interested.
It's not a cheap place to board, or to take lessons. If you
take lessons there, be prepared to share the ring with as many as 8
other horses and 2 other lessons. Instruction is hunt seat.
I only go back to visit my instructor, who boards there (kind
of out of necessity).

Hi Linda - nice to have the notes file back!
I've heard of Chrislar Farm. An uncle of an old friend of
mine used to own it - I don't know if he still does. I think they
are primarily a saddle seat barn, and they often advertise
in the Pedlar. I haven't heard anything bad about them, I
assume they are run like a professional show barn, but I
have not seen the facilities so I can't really comment.
I would think that with any type of barn that sells horses, she
would want to go up and check the place out for herself and maybe
talk to some of the boarders to get some 'inside' information.
Good luck.

HI,
I board my horse down the road from chrislar farms. Since we don't
have an indoor areana, i was thinking of boarding him at cf for
the winter, but... the last i knew of, it was $330.00, a little
out of my range!
I have been there to view their facilities though, and the place
is kept very clean, animals all look healthy and happy.
you can usually tell what type of people you're dealing with by
the way they keep the barn.
the only thing i did not like about cf, was that they do not have
much for turnout, i only noticed 1 small paddock, which i think
horses should have acres to gallop in if they want to.
question: why is your friend selling through a dealer? does your
friend mind that this animal will not have much for turnout while
there? why don't you put a memo in here for the sale?
good luck, tina

Tina, thanks for the suggestion about putting an ad in here but
I did awhile with no response. The horse that she is trying to sell
is a very cute 4 yr old Morgan gelding. I can't remember the note
number that I put it in under but it was the horses for sale ad.
She is also going to advertise in the Yankee Pedlar, Want AD, etc
but wanted to know people's personal opinion about a place along
with looking at it herself (kinda like things can always look good
but it's better to talk to an outsider who knows!)
From what I gather, the selling/training or whatever they call it
board is $400.00 (too rich for my taste but it's not my horse!)
Anyway, thanks for the current (and hopefully more!) replies about
Chrislar Farm!
Linda
P.S. Maybe someone involved in Morgans in the New England area would
be interested in possibly making a little commission on a sale?

-< Some more options >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have talked to the people at Chrislar once when I was interested
in a horse they had for sale. They seem pretty nice, but I got
the impression that they are mostly into saddleseat. Many of the
Morgan farms that deal mostly in showing saddleseat don't have much
turnout for their horses. In fact the horses get most of their
exercise just being worked - BUT they usually don't get worked very
long (20-30 minutes a day) since the people usually have many horses
to work (ever wonder why some show Morgans are so hyper?!).
Some more things for your friend to consider: most of the Morgan
clubs in NE (at least the ones I know of) have newsletters where
they can advertise horses for sale. Some have sales lists which
they send out to anyone asking about horses for sale (some clubs
advertise their sales list in the Morgan Magazine, Pedlar, and other
places). I usually costs a small amount (around $10??? - I'm guessing)
to get on a sales list.
Is your friend's horse strictly saddleseat trained or does he drive
or jump or do anything else? There is also a Morgan Sport Horse
association which has a sales list, too.
Send me mail if your friend is interested in any of these options
and I can probably get some addresses for her.

I think that Charlie Kock is the trainer/instructor there. I was
over there a few years ago when he was just moving in. There was
ALOT of renovation going on and the plans looked great for its future
but that was a few years ago. I've heard from a few people who ride
there and a quite happy.
Can't tell you anymore but I am sure other noters can!

I know, it's tacky to answer one's own reply but...
I spelled his name incorrectly, its Charlie Koch and he has also
just returned from a fairly long stay in Germany browsing over
wonderfully expensive horses and has imported some of them to sell.

| Note 518 has been moved to note 328 - Services Directory.
There is an address & phone # for Arrowhead in note 328.
This farm is mainly a big hunter/jumper barn - Charlie
gives lessons, sells horses, boards, and shows. He also does
some dressage and has imported some warmbloods recently
for sale. His board, lesson, and sale prices are expensive.
He does have a nice facility in Concord.
If you want specific details, give the farm a call - if you
want to talk to someone that knows a little more about
Charlie or the farm, try sending mail to Marianne Scraggs

600.26 | Northeast Legwork | PLANET::KEIRAN | | Fri Apr 22 1988 11:48 | 46 |
| The following is information regarding a new horse brokerage
firm, owned by Amy Shoemaker, and located in Brookline, NH.
She can be reached at 603-672-5326. This is reprinted with
her permission.
Northeast Legwork offers a personalized approach to buying or selling
your horse. I have the ability and interest to discover the optimal
match of horse and rider, and I'll do your legwork. I can save
you time, money, needless travel and the disappointment that often
comes when searching for the right horse or an appropriate home
for an animal you must sell.
For the buyer, Northeast Legwork narrows down the often overwhelming
selection process. I have had a lifelong interest in horses ans
as an experienced competative rider and riding instructor, I can
help find a horse that will meet your specific needs. I have
personally screened each horse listed with Northeast Legwork and
where possible have ridden and videotaped the horse. That way this
information can be available to you before making a trip to look
at the horse yourself. I will provide you with both a written report
and personal account of my evaluation.
When listing with Northeast Legwork, each owner must fill out a
detailed questionnaire that includes a description of the horse's
experience and overall temperment. Buyers are also asked to fill
out a "scout sheet" which tells me exactly what their requirements,
needs and preferences are. Buyers must also describe the kind of
enviroment they can provide for the animal. This information is
needed to assure Northeast Legwork sellers that their horses will
find an appropriate home. The scout sheet can be completed by the
rider, a parent, or a trainer.
Sellers who wish to register with Northeast Legwork must begin by
filling out my questionaire, which not only provides me with
detailed information about the horse, but describes the requirements
of a home for the animal.
Sellers pay a small listing fee to cover travel costs for the
evaluation. Other Northeast Legwork fees are based on a percentage
of the selling price agreed upon in advance.
I hope you can see that Northeast Legwork offers much more than
a computerized matching system for horse and rider. It is a
professional service that emphasizes the personal touch so
necessary for making that right match work.

| STALL AVAILABLE IN CO-OP BARN
Private barn in Northboro, MA near routes 9 & 20. Box stalls, daily
turnout in pastures, and riding ring on 8 acres.
I board my horse here and I think the set up is very nice. The
board is $175.00 per month and includes hay, grain and shavings.
Each boarder is assigned one night a week where they clean all seven
stalls and they bring all the horses in and feed them. But the
horses are out all day and the stalls are cleaned every day so its
just a matter of picking them out. It sounds much worse than it
is.
The two girls that manage the barn do the morning feedings and put
horses out.
I've boarded at several barns and this one has given my horse the
best care.
If interested, please call Beth or Chris (they manage the barn).

Note 236.4 FIRE! Are you prepared? 4 of 8
VIDEO::WHEELER "F.I.D.O." 57 lines 30-MAR-1987 15:00
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We had a fire several years ago. My parents horses
(standardbreds) are stabled at a track in Marlboro - we
live in Berlin (2 towns away). I'll never forget it either -
My parents were away at horse races in Greenfield - they
had trucked some of their friends horses out there. I was
the only one home (I was about 15). Someone called on
the phone - They had a CB, and were talking to someone
at the barn. The barn is on fire - How do they get the
horses out - Boy, My heart still drops thinking about it.
I remember telling the woman to tell the man at the fire
to open the back door of the barn - The front of the barn
was completly in flames. I then heard the man at the
fire say They (the firemen) can't get the door to open
I was yelling into the phone, tell them to PUSH, (Boy,
this really does bring back memories, I'm in tears trying
to write this) and then hearing the man say its to late
we can't get them out. I was screaming (hysterically I think)
(I could hear the horses screams of terror any time the
man on the CB talked).
I finally got a ride to the barn (I didn't have my license
at that time) about an hour after the phone call.
Two horses were turned out in the paddock - I checked they
weren't ours - No, No horses were saved I was told. All
four of our horses died - of smoke inhalation. The bitch
of it is they all died needlessly - The firemen were trying
to open the door of the barn like a garage door,up, instead
of pushing it sideways.
I remember a man coming over to me and saying "Boy you
should look in one of the windows at those horses."
(There were alot of people getting their jollies looking
in the outside stall windows) I lost it, I remember hitting
the man, and starting to scream.
I remember my Dad getting out of the truck and saying Oh
my god, and clutching his heart.
I remember my Mom standing there crying.
The cause of the fire? Two kids decided to torture a kitten.
I went to school with one of the kids - I made sure everyone
knew exactly what they had done.
They (the 2 kids) managed to get charged with negligance
in court.
I still make that kids life miserable any chance I get.

| Hi Linda,
I am involved in harness racing, but that name doesn't ring a bell,
the Beckwith stable is now racing in Maine. Your best bet would be
to write to the United States Trotting Association, 750 Michigan Ave
Columbus, OH 43215. The have an extensive information and research
department that can tell you the breeding going back 4 generations,
(or more if you want) racing record which would consist of number of
starts and how many finishes first through third, money earnings,
marks by year, etc. They are very quick to respond and all you need
to do is send them his name (two horses can't be registered with the
same name through them for a 10 year period). Good luck and let me
know what you find out.

It seems that high costs of moving horses is forcing them to
try and sell the "not so good race horses" and the ones who they
cannot sell may go to the meat wagon!!! Jeanne Sullivan of the
Adopt-A-Horse is tring to save these horses.

600.38 | New Barn on Billerica/Bedford line | MASTIC::KATE | | Thu Jan 11 1990 08:58 | 17 |
| New barn on Billerica/Bedford line.
This barn has 10 of it's 20 stalls complete, and will be a super
facility when done. Stalls are 10x12, rubber mats, with each stall
going out into a small turnout area. There are trails throughout
the 20 acres, and you can get down to the Fish and Game preserve
along the Concord River. Full board is $275 a month.
Plans for the near future include an large outdoor ring - owner has
commitment from Joe Lombard to teach here once the ring is in. Also
in the works will be pouring a floor for a wash stall, closing in
a tack room, finishing the "sitting area" with cofee maker, etc. There
are also plans to begin an indoor ring in the fall.
The owners, Bob & Lori (very pleasant) are around all day long. You
can reach them anytime (508) 663-3755. Or, I can field some questions.

| Five new stalls available!
At Cross Stone Farm, right off Rt. 117 in Lancaster, Massachusetts.
This is a fairly new barn (only 2 years old) with a small indoor
arena, two long runs and two good sized fields for turn out.
Full board only - either inside or pasture board. $300/$200.
I currently board my two year old filly with Judy Leach at Cross Stone.
I think the care is excellent, the facility is not elaborate but very
functional. Judy has had horses for years and understands how to take
care of them in a stress-free environment. She has full time help so
there's someone around all day cleaning stalls, turning horses out,
bringing horses in and keeping an eye on what's going on.
You can reach Judy Leach on 508.534.0644 or 508.534.1455.

600.44 | Winchester Farm | BUSY::DEC | | Fri Apr 27 1990 12:07 | 23 |
| Winchester Farm in Bellingham, MA. currently has a limited number
of stalls available. This is primarily a dressage facility (although
there are some hunt seat riders who incorporate dressage into their
training). The trainer/instructor, Bill Warren, (who is also a show
judge) has worked and trained extensively with Karl Mikolka in Austria
and at Temple Farms in Illinois. Bill's training methods are superb.
Above and beyond the excellence in training/instruction available,
the care at Winchester Farm is quality! The facility is fairly new
(opened in Sept.,1989) and is very lovely. There are 15 box stalls,
a wash stall, a viewing and tackroom, and an attached 70 x 130 indoor
riding arena. All of the barn people are friendly and knowledgeable,
and handle the horses with kindness. If you require some special
need you know it will be done. There's no need to worry when you
board here.
If you wish to know more about Winchester Farm, please contact the
owner Gloria Dec at 508-966-0675 or 508-966-3501. Leave a message
on the answering machine and your call will be returned.

| Kathy,
A good way to find out about horse shows is to join the New England
Horseman's Council. An individual membership is only $15. a year,
I think, and includes a free subscription to the Horseman's Yankee
Pedlar (monthly newspaper that covers incredible amount of horse news
in all disciplines). When you sign up for NEHC, the application asks
what divisions you are interested in, and then you automatically get
put on the mailing list for all NEHC-affiliated horse shows that offer
those divisions. It is an incredible bargain, and you get a lot of
great horse mail!
Applications can be found in any NEHC horse show program, or in a copy
of the Yankee Pedlar.

600.58 | Great Trainer | JUPITR::MENARD | | Mon Mar 11 1991 09:21 | 24 |
| I'm not sure if this belongs as it's own separate note, or should be
appended to one of the other training notes, please let me know if it
should be moved.
I sent my 3 yr old out in early Feb. to be trained, and am extremely
impressed with the results.
I really hadn't done much with him, tho I had been on his back
bareback.
In 5 short weeks, Spider walks, trots (3 different speeds!) canters,
and Whoa's great. I am particularly impressed with the Whoa. Ken has
taught him that whoa means now! and you don't take another step until I
tell you to. He can get off him and walk around the arena and Spider
doesn't take one step, nor does he take his eyes off the trainer.
AND Spider now likes the trainer better than me:-( He adores the guy,
which, to me, says something about the trainer.
If anyone has a need to send a horse out to be trained, I highly
recommend this guy. His place is not fancy, nor does he have an indoor
arena, but his price and work make up for it ($400/mth).

600.59 | Oops, name of trainer... | JUPITR::MENARD | | Mon Mar 11 1991 11:53 | 9 |
| For anyone interested, the trainer mentioned in the previous reply
is K D C Ranch, Ken Corey, Leicester, MA. Phone number is
508-892-9857.
He also takes great care of them. The stalls are always spotless, and
he feeds hay 4/5 times daily (so they don't stand around bored) and
checks them at night before going to bed.

600.66 | Deerhorn has an opening or 2 | CARTUN::MISTOVICH | | Wed Apr 17 1991 13:36 | 44 |
| There will be a couple of openings at Deerhorn Farm at the end of the
month that the owners would like to fill with year-round boarders. The
owners, Frank and Emily Coolidge, are very nice people. The
manager, Kris Bobo, is an FEI level trainer who I believe has been
either long or watch listed for USET.
Deerhorn is a private facility with room for 16 horses.
. Horses are grained 3 times/day and hayed 4 times/day.
. Stalls are roomy and well-bedded with shavings, and most have
floor mats.
. Daily turnout in private pastures for approximately 2 hours/day.
. Blacksmiths are John Blombach and Garth Bodkin (if he has time!)
. Vets are Orcutt and Gill, although some boarders use McCreery,
Stillman, or whoever their personal favorite is for emergencies
. Outdoor and indoor dressage arenas. The indoor has excellent
footing and strategically placed mirrors. The outdoor has good
footing and overlooks the cow pasture (complete with cows)
. Deerhorn abutts conservation land with beautiful trails.
. The atmosphere is friendly and laid-back, the care is professional.
. Dressage schooling shows are held throughout the season.
. The location is excellent, in Harvard, just 3-4 miles from the
2/495 and 117/495 intersections
. Kris is available for lessons ($40/hour) Monday-Friday mornings
only. However, after she comes back from having her baby (return
planned for mid-June or so, but you know how these things go) is
considering teaching Saturday mornings. Obviously, more potential
Saturday students would provide more incentive!)
Board is $400/month. I left the Coolidge's number at home, but will
bring it tomorrow!

I talked to (can't remember her name) seemed very competent. I wonder
if it's still run by the same people??

Janice, I dont know where your coming from - but you can take
495 N or S and get off at rt 62 (exit 26 Berlin/Hudson). Head into
Berlin. You'll come to Berlin center (very small) you'll see a church
and a lumber place (that will be it)
Then you will come to a blinking yellow light (on a bad corner) take
a LEFT at the light. Then you will see a fork right away - you want
to stay to the RIGHT of the fork (onto LINDEN street)
Stay on Linden for 2mi - you will want to took for Ball Hill Road on
the LEFT. (it will be the 2nd left on Linden st)
Maple Wood will be the 1st farm on the LEFT - you can't miss it.
If you need directions from another direction - let me know
Lousia
