Did anybody see the final of the VOLVO Nations Cup Show Jumping on ESPN last weekend? It was televised from Paris (France not Texas). The notable part of the event, and I haven't yet looked at the video recording I made, was all the blue and white +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | d | i | g | i | t | a | l | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ signs all around the arena. DEC France also supplied the computer that worked out the scoring. I guess you can do these things when you're removed from the corporate headquarters bureaucracy that has to review everything sixteen times before modifying it out of all recognition.

The latest junk mail to drop into my mail box is from the American Equine Association. It appears that this "Association" is another front for the Chase Manahattan Bank, since you join the Association by applying for a Chase credit card, the "Equine Card". This is really a VISA card with a picture of a mare and foal on the front. You will also get the opportunity to use this new found plastic happiness to purchase at a discount and 17.5% APR goods and services from national equine suppliers. In the words of H.L. Menken: "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public"

Two of the things I brought back from my just completed trip to Europe were NTSC videotapes of the 1991 and 1992 Volvo World Cup Dressage Final Competitions. The 1991 Finals were held in the Palais Omnisports in Bercy, a suburb of Paris. I started looking at this tape last night. Various, presumably sponsors', banners were hung around the walls of the arena, with Volvo banners being most prominent. There hanging on the side of the arena behind S was the blue and white Digital logo. Somebody high up in DEC France must like horses.

Yes, Digital has prominent banners at the Dublin horse show as well, and also does the time-keeping, etc. -ellie |
