We are having a problem with one of our broodmares - has anyone out there ever experienced this or something similar??? What was the outcome?? The mare is a 6 year old TB who has had two foals - when we took her to be bred, the vet palpated her and said that she had incredibly poor 'uterine tone' and he was sure she would not culture clean. She did culture clean however, and but they are still discouraging us from breeding her because of the uterine tone. Is there anything we can do to improve it (the farm vet wasn't very helpful)?? Since I did not own her during the previous pregnancies, I don't know if she had a trauma during foaling, etc, but it seems like a shame to just give up without trying, particularly since she is a very nice mare. The mare is in very good physical condition otherwise. Anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks, Claire

Sounds to me like you are getting the run-around. I would begin to suspect the opinion of any vet who would speculate on the success of a culture after only performing a palpation. There are some new (young and inexperienced) vets who like to perform Caslicks Procedures as a matter of course but more experienced vets will normally wait for a series of cultures before prescribing it. I would push back hard on the stallion owner and if they wouldn't cooperate, I'd find another stallion. Bob

We once had a TB mare that did in fact have extremely bad tone of the uterus, and were sucessful in getting her in foal. She was prone to uterine infections,as my vet stated because,TB'safter having one or two foals are prone to getting a tipped vulva,in that when they enter into heat, the opening to the uterus opens naturally, she would take a dump-an the potential for fecal matter to drop inside was evident w/cultures i.e. ecoli,beta-hemolitic staph etc.We got around that with suturing the vulva after we got her bred and cutting her just before foaling.Since you got a good culture I would have the vet check the walls of the uterus for evidence of scaring possible from a previous foaling. If that checks clean-then I wouldn't hesitate and breed the mare.Hope that helps some and if I can further explain anything call me at dtn 895-5425 Gary Reynolds

Thanks for the information - I've gotten another vet involved, and will keep you posted. Right now she's got good follicles coming along, but doesn't seem to be coming into heat as they would expect. The new vet said that when she was ready to ovulate, he would manually open the cervix (ouch!?!) and breed her... thanks again - and wish us luck! Claire |
