| You might call Ben Wade at Parker CO (just outside of Denver) to
see if might have something. I don't have his number but I'm sure
you could get it through information. He specializes in hunter/jumper
types.
I'll also check around other places.

220.2 | Interest in Trak/App Cross? | BOTTLE::MONTVILLE | Sharon Montville | Mon Mar 09 1987 15:23 | 14 |
| Would you consider a Trakehner/Appaloosa with spots? I know of
one or two that were for sale a while back, and can research further
if you are interested.
Sharon
P.S. I know that there were quite a few Appaloosa mares in this
region that were bred to Secretariat a few years back; will see
if I can find out more about it. They'd probably be getting on
in years now, but maybe their offspring? I have an "Appaloosa
Running Horse" myself, but she does not have spots and was bred
in Texas. I also have a TB type Appy gelding with spots, but the
"perfect horse" he is not! ;^) And he's unregistered; have no idea
who bred him.

220.3 | as long as it has spots! | PMRV70::MACONE | | Mon Mar 09 1987 16:06 | 9 |
| Yes, I would love a trak/cross (that's what my almost perfect horse
is...except no spots). If it was a trak/app cross I would want
color for sure. I would also be interested in Secretariat lines...we
have a grandson that is standing in Mass but he is not breeding
quality in my opinion.
This is great! Thanks for the responses!

220.5 | A local suggestion | ZEPPO::FOX | | Tue Mar 10 1987 11:45 | 17 |
| If you care abuot registering the horse as an Appaloosa then you
might want to look into the approved breeds for ApHC. Last heard,
Trakheners were not one of them (no warmbloods, no Holsteiners,
etc.) If you are interested in a good cross to use as a dressage
or event horse then (this will be one of those believe it or not
deals, but) check out what Karen Dodge has to offer out of her Paloos
stallion and her Abington mare. I have a 5 year old 16.0 hand chestnut
gelding which I used for dressage last year (did extremely well)
and who I will be using for dressage and some eventing this year.
He is VERY talented and great to work around. He is also very willing.
I used him on pace events this year with no stops over all types
of fences!
Good luck in your search!!!

220.6 | I love the spots | PMRV70::MACONE | | Tue Mar 10 1987 12:43 | 20 |
| RE: .5
You are right...warmblood crosses can't be registered with the ApHC.
I show primarily on the open circuit and although I do go to some
breed shows...my first love is dressage and if a warmblood cross
is what I need...registration is secondary. There is a movement
underway, however, by the Appaloosa Sport Horse organization to
work with the ApHC toward registering warmblood crosses. I have
to admit...I'm in it for the spots...I don't like the idea of solids
being registerable (I know this is controversial)...I'm a firm believer
in the apps as a color breed. I'm sure if I was a breeder...I would
be happy there is a market for the solids. Anyway, feedback from
the ApHC on the subject of registering warmblood crosses is positive.
I feel in the next few years this will be an accepted cross.
I know who Karen Dodge is...I give her a call! Thanks...and keep
your eyes open...

| Good luck in your search Jeanne. Regardless of the movements to
allow warmbloods crosses to be registered with ApHC, I would suggest
putting serious thought into resale possiblities on a (as an example)
Trak/App cross. Papers may not mean much to you (now), but that
could change, or you may decide to sell the horse. Marketability
on a polka dotted/unregistered anything drops significantly.
I have several friends who are involved in promoting App's in the
"English" arena. I'm sure they could put you in contact with some
good sources for stock. Sure hope this doesn't sound to pessimistic.

220.8 | papers or not...here I come | PMRV70::MACONE | | Fri Mar 13 1987 11:14 | 21 |
| Ann, Who are the people who are the people that you know that promote
english apps....I would be interested in talking to them!
Also, I understand the up and down side of having an unregistered
spotted horse. I am involved with the breed shows to a certain
degree and understand how important registered horses are in these
circles. However, for the most part, the circles I travel and show
in put little stock in registration papers....the primary concern
is performance. I'm not naive...I know what the prejudice is against
spots on the open circuit....I aim to find a spotted horse that
is talented enough to do well even on the open circuit (oh well,
so much for the judges who go crazy at the sight of spots). Also,
I field hunt and those people pay an arm and 3 legs for a horse
that is quiet in the field....no matter what it looks like. I guess
it's just a different market.
You're response wasn't pessimistic....for the most part you speak
the truth...I guess I'm just a rebel at heart (I'll be a broke one
too, right?)

| One person who comes to mind immediately is Marge Barletta. I *THINK*
she's in East Haven, West Haven, or Milford, CT. I don't have her
address handy, but I can get it. Marge is a private owner who I
became friendly with 'cause she and I would be the only two people
in a ring showing polka-dotted hunters.
Another person is Jackie Whipple. Jackie's also a private owner,
but her primary interest is Dressage. She currently owns a 2 yr
old filly who'd knock your socks off...she plans on showing her
halter this year...maybe under saddle later in the year. I'll see
her tonight and try to get more contacts.
Wilson Farm in Middletown, CT is a primarily App farm. They have
lots of good stock going in and out of there too. Talk to Melanie
Gay.
Kip Shephard's wife Barbara was showing a pretty mare last year.
I think only a 3 year old...should hold lots of potential. I think
just about anything on the farm is for sale.
Let me know if I can help in any way....I'm sure I'm forgetting
a ton of people...Don't forget Linda's suggestion of Karen Dodge!

| I found a really nice horse this weekend! Private barn in New
Hampshire....he is a real hunter type and has real potential over
fences. He is by Justin Marshall who occasionally throws some real
hunter types....he has a gorgeous head and neck and is a lovely
mover (the rest of him is nice too!) He's 16.1 and I don't love
his color but he should polish up pretty nicely. He's a roan with
splashes of color. Now....if he will just pass the vet. Will keep
you posted and thanks for the suggestions. (re: .9...I've been
to Wilson's and Shepards....anyway, if those other people you mentioned
have a hunter type mare...I have a friend who is looking)

If you're friend is interested in a coming 2 yr old filly let me
know via VAXmail. I have a friend who's got one that she said she'd
talk about selling to the right party.

| Congratulations, Jeanne!
I have been dying to tell you that I have exactly the horse you described, but
thought it would be bad form until you found one of your own. He's a Leopard
App gelding, about 15.2 - 16 hands, real long legged, terrific mover, and (when
not proving otherwise) generally very eager. I have not started him jumping
yet, but he has shown willingness and ability when confronted with a few
impromtu obstacles on trail rides. For those of you who follow this file, this
is the same horse that I described in my introduction note. We have both come a
long way in the last year.
Good luck to you. I hope that your new find turns out as well as mine.

Well, if my new find dosen't pass the vet, I guess I'll have to
convince you to sell me your horse! I wonder how many app enthusiasts
out there would be interested in get together of some kind. Do
you show on the app circuit?

| re: .13
No, I don't show on the app circuit. I'm a real novice. My instructor
has been trying to convince me to show. She says its good for both me and
the horse. But I'd rather wait until I'm more proficient. I'd hate to
waste some poor judge's time.
As for an App get together, I'd love to but the geography is not in
my favor. I'm in the Carolinas. I offered my farm for the last get
together, but didn't get too many takers!!
Selling my horse is absolutely out of the question! If you're nice
to me, I might let you LOOK at him. (ha!) I never understood how
these "horse people" could get so attached to their animals. Now,
after a year of blood, sweat, and tears, I've fallen into the
same trap. God help us all!!

| This is it you guys! I'm ready to slit my throat.....(sounds drastic,
dosen't it?) My spotted thoroughbred failed the vet!!@#*$%^&*
...it seems he has the beginnings of navicular. Well, here we go
again...the search is on (and boy, am I getting sick of looking).
My trip to Colorado is off for now (it's Grand Rapids instead!).
Please keep your eyes peeled and, Ed, you better keep your horse
under lock and key!
