In reference to 10.105, Linda how did you cope with your "bug crazy" mare? My mare goes into a frenzy when a bug even looks at her. I use original formula Repel -X only dilluting it 3 to 1, it helps but she still gets upset. If anyone else has had success in getting the bugs away please add your methods! -Marianne

My first method of coping was tearing my hair out! This mare would shake her head, kick out, etc. whenever bugs were around and when you do all of your schooling in a hay field, there are going to be plenty of bugs to drive you crazy! What I finally ended up doing is using bug spray (which are generally worthless but they make be feel like I am doing something), keeping her face and ears clipped close (except for the inside of the ears) so that the bugs wouldn't brush the ends of hairs and upset her and also school with a full fly net. At shows and such, there are usually few bugs so that wasn't much of a problem, however if it was, I used to stuff cotton balls in her ears for the noise (very carefully mind you!) My main problem was riding at home because at shows there were always less bugs! Good luck! Linda

Linda, you just described my mare. She kicks, bucks, and shakes her head. She doesn't like working in a field with tall grass. I guess I'll just go with the bug spray and during the real buggy weather ride in the morning or evening and use lots of bug spray. Noises don't bother her, so I won't have to go the cotton route, but thanx for the tips. -Mare-

Hi.... I also do alot of of my conditioning in a field. Cody goes nuts when bugs are around so I tried a product that is meant for dogs. (I'll get the name.) I use it around his head and in his ears - also on his "equipment". I also use an earnet on him. I have used this for 3 years and works well - except in real hot weather because they sweat so much. 575.4 | nylon stockings | CSC32::M_HOEPNER | Fri Feb 13 1987 12:55 | 8
If your horse is really fussy about bugs around the muzzle, a ladies nylon stocking over the muzzle (and attached to the caveson) will keep the little varmits from tickling. Mary Jo Hoepner (new DEC person) |
