As far as Vets go we use Buckhill out of Spencer, (Paula, Sue)
we are satisfied with the quality and the manner in which they operate
they are also, readily available. If you are looking or are new
to the Central Mass area, I strongly recommend using them.

9.4 | VETS | LAUREL::REMILLARD | | Mon Mar 03 1986 15:45 | 13 |
| I have been lucky enough that I haven't needed a vet for some years
and would be up a creek if I did, as the only Vet that I would feel
good about is located very far from me (Dr. Meehan - out of the
Chichester NH area). There are some located in Peterboro NH - but
I was NOT impressed.... the vet that came to my farm told me that
he mainly did sheep, goats and cattle.
How many folks "out there" give their own shots?? I do, and have
been ordering from Foster & Smith for my vaccines and am very happy
with their products (from leading companies) and fast delivery -
prices aren't bad either.

good. He sold his practice, now is freelancing all over. You'd
like him I'm sure.

| An extremely good vet (stitching, lameness, breeding problems, etc)
is Dr. Micheal Lennon from Nashoba Valley Animal Hospital in Westford.
I stumbled upon him when no other vets were available and my Appaloosa
mare got kicked very badly in the knee. It was the type of injury
that was very tricky to stitch (joint capsule protruding from wound)
yet this guy not only stitched it but virtually no scar. He is
very good with the animals and also extremely helpful if someone
just has general knowledge questions (just call him on the phone
and he answers questions).

9.7 | N.H. Vet - Dr. Cutter | DSSDEV::MURPHY | Is it Friday yet? | Fri Mar 21 1986 13:35 | 14 |
| I agree with you on Dr. Cutter being extremely good. I board my
horse in Auburn, NH and Dr. Cutter has been my barn's vet for a
number of years with nothing but high praise. He even sat up all
night once with a very ill mare who had just delivered a foal.
Unfortunately, the mare had become too weak and had to be put down
- she had colic during the delivery. The previous owner of that
mare had failed to mention she had damage to her insides for lack
of proper worming. Had the new owner known this, she never would
have bred her.
The foal, however, turned out to be a healthy, beautiful colt (now
gelded) and he is developing beautifully. He is of Morgan/Arab
breeding (Morab) and although he was an orphan soon after birth,
he's a big colt. His stable name is "Jamie".

| I just found out about this notes file last week. I have lived
and kept horses in Chester, NH for the last 10 years (that's about
15 miles east of Manchester. Right now, I am getting Pauline Hubbard
from Haverhill, MA as my horse vet. She seems to be excellent.
She does only horses including a lot of work at Rockingham. In
this part of NH, I also know that Dr. Meehan out of Chichester is
supposed to be excellent. Up until last year, I was getting Dr.
Jerry Beckman, who is now Rockingham Track vet, so he does not have
time for private horses anymore.
Also in the area is Wadleigh Falls Veterinary Clinic in Lee, NH.
Dr Irving Salkovitz is the main vet with two other younger vets.
They rotate between working in the small animal clinic and going
on the road for large animals. I take my small animals there, but
prefer to have a vet who only does horses for my horses.
I have also heard good things about Dr. Cutter, who was mentioned
in previous notes.

I'D LIKE SHARE SOME INFORMATION ON TUFTS THAT COULD BE VERY HELPFUL
TO ANYONE HAVING TO USE THEIR FACILITIES. I HAD A HORSE THAT WAS
VERY SICK A HAD TO TAKE HIM TO TUFTS.I FOUND OUT WHILE I WAS THERE
THAT THEIR STUDENTS ARE ON THREE WEEK ROTATIONS.WHICH MEANS THAT
THE STUDENTS THAT WANT TO BE SMALL AMIMAL VETS ALSO HAVE TO WORK
WITH THE HORSES.WHEN YOU BRING YOUR HORSE IN THEY ASSIGN A STUDENT
TO YOUR HORSE,SO YOU MAY GET SOMEONE WHO KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT HORSES.
ALSO THEY HAVE A TEACHING ACCOUNT THAT IN SOME CASES(RARE CASES
AND SOMETIMES POOR OWNERS)THEY WILL PICK UP MOST OF THE BILL. AGAIN
THIS IS RARE BUT THEY DO IT.YOUR VET CAN SOMETIMES HAVE SOME PULL
IN THIS.MY HORSE WAS THERE FOR THREE DAYS,HAD EVERY TEST IN THE
BOOK DONE ON HIM(COMPLETE EXRAYS,STOMICH TAPS,CANCER TEST,BONE MARROWS,
BLOOD TEST EVERY TWO HOURS,STOMACH SCOPES,AND MORE)AND ALL I WAS
CHARGED WAS $200.00! HE HAD AN UNUSUAL CASE OF SENSITIVITY TO BUTE
WHICH CAUSE A BLEEDING ULCER.(EVEN MADE THE MEDICAL JOURNALS).MY
VET DID HAVE A LOT TO DO WITH IT ALSO. HOPE THIS MAY BE HELPFUL.
P.S. PLEASE ONLY RESPOND ON NOTES FILE. THANKS.

Dr. Stephen Purdy - in the Amherst MA area (travel is not a problem
he comes to my place, more than an hour away, and
charges no more than any other vet, and is very
accessable nights and weekends)
phone - 413-467-3770
Dr. Johnson - (N.H./Vermont animal clinic, Brattleboro VT) will also
travel, and is very easy to get for emergency
situations.
phone - 802-254-5422
And as an excellent alternative to Tufts is the Rochester Animal
Clinic in Rochester N.H. Phone 603-332-6482
I have dealt with both vets on a number of occations for regular
checks as well as a few emergencies and would recommend them to
anyone. For anyone uncomfortable with Tufts, Rochester is a
great second choice.

| RE .16
I went to Rochester Equine Clinic yesterday with a horse that has
had an ongoing leg abcess problem. I cannot say enought good for
the place. It took us about 1 hr and 45 minutes from Harvard MA
to get there, and its an easy drive, all highway. They had an
appointment set up every hour, so there wasn't a traffic jam in
the parking lot, and horses weren't running into each other inside.
All the vets were very knowledgable, and conferred with each other
on our case before making recommendations. The operating room has
windows so you can see your horse being worked on. They also have
one of those pools for the horses, if they have the type of injury
that would require such exersize. The students who are working
there aren't allowed to treat a horse unless they are being supervised
by one of the vets, and everyone was on a first name basis, so it
seemed much more personalized. They were treating everything from
Red Maple poisioning to embryo transplants. I honestly have to
say that I wasn't the least bit uncomfortable leaving our horse
there, and would most definitly take any other major problems I
had to those people.

9.30 | Best NH Vet I know of | WILKIE::PERKINS | | Tue Jul 26 1988 13:02 | 21 |
| In the southern and central New Hampshire area I have used 12 different
vets in the past 8 years and the best by far is Cindy Brown from
Rocheater Equine Clinic. I had a mare that foundered in 82 and from
then until this year we have had lameness problems for about a week
to a month at a time with mare every 2 years. 11 different vets
did tests, took xrays and all diagnosed it as cronic founder. Well
the horse did not respond to the treatment but responded to antibiotics
every time. Well $7500, 10 vets and 6 years later Cindy listened,
examined the mare and diagnosed it as cronic absesses caused by
the wet weather. All the symptoms, time of year, and response fit
together. One week with Sugardine (Betadine and sugar) to draw the
absess out of the laminae and a $20 exam fee is all it took.
Cindy Brown now does all of our work for the breeding farm, ultrasound
breeding exams of the mares, inseminations etc. She is by far the
best equine vet I have run across in the New England area. All she
does is horses and she is very knowlegable and doesn't let her ego
get in the way.

I use Dr Terrance McGee, sounds like the son. He is very good and
responsive. My old girl doesn't come up lame very often but suffers
from allergies in the summer. He has been very good with the treatment.
He also worked with another horse in the barn who had a Kidney stone.
The owner says Dr McGee made the difference because he kept calling
and visiting until the crisis was over.

This is the Still River Rd. location. Elaine has told me that
He is no longer there. Dr. Smiley no longer works with Dr. Gill

No, it is not the Still River Road location. To get to his place,
you take (depending on where you live) 495 north/south to the 117
Bolton/Stow exit. He is right there off of the exit. I'm not sure
if it is left or right, I was there a couple of months ago, but can't
remember. If you call, they would be happy to give you directions,
if it is the same receptionist, she is very nice.

9.37 | NH Vet Recommendations? | SPACEY::CSILVA | I finally got a PONY of my OWNY | Wed Nov 08 1989 13:16 | 21 |
| I'm looking for references for a vet located close to the Wilton,NH
area. We've just bought a new home (for us and the *kids*) and
although they are healthy as proverbial horses now... well, one never
knows -- do they?
I've read thru all the notes associated with DIR/KEY =
VET_RECOMMENDATIONS and so far have really only found one that is even
remotely neraby (ie: Dr. Cutter).
These are not "just pets". And finding someone who understands that they
really are part of the family is very important to us. We will spare
little expense to keep them healthy and happy. A Dr. who treats them
like just another dumb animal and the owners as people who ask to many
questions simply won't do.
Thanks in advance,
Cheryl -- who just couldn't be happier having the babies right in her
own back yard!!! :-))

| Cheryl,
Try Sheila Lyons in Peterborough. She bought our old farm there and
from what I've heard is doing horses exclusively. I don't know her
phone number though, so you'll probably have to call information. The
people at Otter Brook Farm in Peterborough knew here before she moved
up to NH and say she is really good with their horses (if you need a
reference). Sheila also has her own horses (Swedish Warmbloods, I
believe) and I think she shows them in dressage. I haven't met her,
but we did talk to her on the phone when she was in the process of
buying the farm and she seemed really nice. Mostly I'm going by the
Otter Brook recommendation - and they are really fussy about their
horses.

| Just for anyone who might be interested. I have a thoroughbred
mare who got nailed by another mare in a pasture setting. Not
uncommon. This event occurred Friday around 1pm (11/10/89). Farm
Manager called me at work, notified my vet and within 1 HOUR my
vet was at barn, along with myself, his assistant and farm manager.
My horses wound was cleaned, flushed, and surtured by 3pm.
If you're looking for a vet who is this responsive and you are living

try Dr. Thomas Butera of Blackstone Valley Vet. Hospital.
Telephone No: (508) 278-6581.
I have used Dr. Butera for my horses since 1983, and service has

9.50 | Dr. Mark Anderson - NH - SUPER! | XCUSME::BLAKE | MTS Technical Support @MKO | Thu Apr 30 1992 11:47 | 21 |
|
We have been using Dr. Mark Anderson for the past two years.
He is super! Always up on the latest and greatest information.
Has a very competent office staff as well as an answering service
that you can trust.
He travels around with a beeper and a portable telephone so you know
you can always reach him.
He obviously loves his work and his patients obviously love him.
We just can't say enough about how pleased we are with his knowledge,
service and "bed" side manner.

I also like mark anderson, hes from the midwest orginally
and its just how he treats the horses the way i'm accustomed to.
word to the wise if you use another vet in place of him, he seems to
take it personally and I guess figures you can go to another vet.

9.52 | Anybody do "tall sheep"? | DEVMKO::BROWN_J | I wanna be a llama mmama | Fri Sep 04 1992 12:58 | 16 |
| I'm new to this notesfile (since I don't have
any horses it wasn't too useful!) and hope you
won't mind seeing an occasional question from
a future llama owner. I know they aren't the
same animal but it seems closer in topic than
trying to ask this in CANINE or FELINE!
I am hoping for a recommendation of a vet in the
Wilton, NH area that takes care of llamas --
does anybody know if their vet has expanded their
large animal practice to these gentle creatures?
Thanks for letting me ask my non-horse question,
Jan

9.53 | ULTRASOUND anyone? | CARTUN::MISTOVICH | | Fri Sep 11 1992 10:28 | 8 |
| Algiers has what looks like a pretty severe injury in his left front
leg. Can anyone recommend a very good vet that services the Harvard,
Mass. area who can do ultrasound for lameness?
(Sally McCreery, Sue Johnson and Paula Orcutt do pregnancy only)
Thanks,
Mary

| Thanks for moving my note to proper place.
For everyone's info, Chris Emerson is no longer doing ultrasounds on
horses.
Marty Simonson is starting to do them again (although according to his
office "he's a bit rusty") plus he's cut back on his track business so
he's possibly more available locally.
Update on Algiers -- Algiers seemed worse Friday afternoon -- was
sitting back on his haunches with his leg stuck out in front of him.
His leg was hot up to the shoulder and blown up to the knee. After
discussion with the vet, we agreed that x-rays were in order and set
up a time for Saturday. Saturday morning he was suddenly drastically
improved. Turned out he'd blown an abcess during the night! (During
his exam, he was negative to hoof testers, pressure on heel and digital
pulse!)

9.55 | Stone bruises --> abcesses | ESCROW::ROBERTS | | Mon Sep 14 1992 12:45 | 11 |
| Glad to hear it was just an abcess! They can look awful -- I have a
horse who used to get them all the time, no matter what I did. And
they didn't always show up with hoof testers. Got so that the vet
would start "looking" around with the hoof knife anyway and what a
difference once he'd find it -- like a miracle cure. I think this
horse used to develop them from stone bruises. He used to be in a
paddock with hard ground, with the occasional rock (which he'd search
out and jump on, I swear!). His current paddock is soft and has a lot
of mud (especially this year) and he hasn't had once since I moved him.

| The first thing we looked for was any sign of a stone bruise. He was
trimmed a couple days after he went lame and the blacksmith (Garth
Bodkin) found no sign of anything!

| Our TB had a hoof abcess a few years back, for no explicable reason, it
just showed up....he'd be lame intermittantly, finally x-rays were
taken and lo and behold! The blacksmith did a hoof-resection, did an
excellent job, it healed beautifully and C-key has been fine ever
since, not a lick of trouble at all anymore.

| She is good. WHen I was back east I had her come over a few times
when her partner (my regular vet) was not available. She is very
good with the horses, soft spoken and doesn't use unnecessary force
on them. I had a youngster at the time ~2 years that had cut open
his leg and she did an excellent job with him.
A horse at the barn where I used to ride was nicknamed Smiley because
every time he saw her he'd start whinnying for her to come over to him
(so there's one vote of confidence from the horses mouth! :-)

| Re: 9.50
We wanted to contact Mark Anderson about treating our
llamas and while we were delighted to find that he does
indeed know about/treat llamas, we wanted to let y'all
know that he has moved.
He was in Goffstown, but has moved to New Boston, NH --
which is even closer to us!
New info:
Mark Anderson DVM
52 High Street
New Boston, NH 03070
(603) 487-2900
By the way, he seemed quite knowledgable and personable
and we are very happy to have found him -- at least
partly due to the recommendation in this notesfile!

9.70 | Help! - looking for a vet that will travel to Royalson MA | NETCAD::MORENZ | JoAnne Morenz Network Management Eng. | Thu Apr 25 1996 13:53 | 9 |
| I just moved to Royalston - just west of Winchendon - south of Fitzwilliam NH,
east of Warwick and north of Phillipston.
I can not for the life of me find a large animal vet that will come to
Royalston. I used to use Buck Hill - but they draw the line at Winchendon. Does
anybody know of any vets in the North/Central MA, South/Central NH area?
Thanks for your help,
JoAnne

9.71 | a few suggestions | LJSRV2::SCHLENER | | Fri Apr 26 1996 14:40 | 10 |
| Well... I live in Phillipston. I used to use Steven Purdy from Hadley -
he's excellent - pretty expensive. I don't know if he'll come up our
way since it's been 5 1/2 years since my horse died.
Suggestion - call Windswept Stable in Petersham and find out who they
use as a vet. It's a very good stable so I would assume the vet they
use will be a good one. Robin Hinton is the owner (724-3323).
Good luck.

9.72 | another suggestion | LJSRV2::SCHLENER | | Fri Apr 26 1996 14:42 | 6 |
| Just in case - you could call Dr Cheryl Nygard (Templeton) for
suggestions. She's my dog dr - she used to work on horses until she
hurt her neck.
I would try Windswept Stables first and then try Dr. Nygard.

9.73 | Vet Needed | CSLALL::THOMPSON | | Mon Jun 17 1996 13:01 | 14 |
| Hi,
After weeks of searching I think I finally found a horse.
My instructor is going to look at him tomorrow and if all
goes well I will go forward with the vet check. I was
wondering if anyone knew of a vet in the Worcester area.
The horse is located in Oxford which is fairly close to
Worcester.
Any input is appreciated!
Thanks,
Andrea
