211.0. "Do you have a broodmare?" by PMRV70::MACONE () Thu Jan 08 1987 13:55

    If you have an open broodmare, you might be interested in this!

    I have a friend who owns a stud service to "Aragorn" who would like
    to find someone who has a nice broodmare that can be bred to him
    in 1987 using the service she owns. In return, she would keep partial
    interest in the foal. Details (and a contract) would have to be
    worked out with the individual.

    This is a nice opportunity for the right person. "Aragorn's" stud
    fee is now $1,500 (he is advertised in the Chronicle Stallion issue).
    This is a really outstanding sire and his foals sell for good money.
    Let me know if you are interested!

211.2info on AragornWHOARU::NAJJARFri Jan 09 1987 14:427
    Aragorn is a dk bay TB, 16.2 h. He raced until he was 5, and won
    on the A circuit as an open hunter and jumper. He stands at Wicklow
    Farms in VT. He is a bit on the heavier side for a TB, not the
    real fine boned, small hoof type. If you cross an arab to him you'll
    end up with an Anglo/Arab, one of the 'hottest' (read hyper) crosses
    you can get! However, they make nice crosses if you are going to
    do eventing.

    Aragorn is gorgeous, but then I'm predjudiced towards the more
    substantial TB's. His TB kids are real pretty but tend to be
    on the HOT side. I can't imagine crossing him with an Arab because
    of such disimilar conformations. A warmblood perhaps, but if I was
    standing him, it would be to TB mares for the return on investment.
    The last add I saw for him mentioned *approved mares* only, for
    whatever that's worth.

    One side note: The last thing I'd want to be riding on a cross country
    course is a hot unpredictable horse. Don't confuse boldness with
    hyperness, please. There's enough accidents these days without
    asking for one.

    I must disagree with you on the disimilar conformation. It has sure
    it has been done before and can produce good offspring. The temperment
    of the Arab can be controled or altered in how you handle, teach
    it personally and train it for the application needed. I to have
    an Arab gelding, 4 years old and has a good mind, he's easy to handle
    because we taught him to listen to us or the trainer, etc..
    If you teach them what to do,(just like children)they will LEARN
    and know what is expected. It's up to the individual(s)to have it
    done.

    re .3

    I don't know if you have seen Aragorn in person...but he has very
    good bone and has a wonderful temperament. I have not found his
    babies to be what I would consider HOT, but definitely more sensitive
    than warmbloods. As far as approved mares are concerned.....yes,
    they won't take just any old mare, the mare we took to him last
    year was a nice quality appaloosa. So, they are not prejudice against
    spots! His babies are doing super in the dressage ring as well
    as the hunter ring.

211.6Anglo Arabs hot?CSC32::M_HOEPNERFri Feb 13 1987 12:2914
    Regarding your note about Anglo Arabs being hot--

    All the ones I have worked with are no hotter than any other types
    I've encountered. Actually the one I have now (and her entire family)
    is incredibly sensible (and smart). In fact, she has won blues
    in Class A hunter shows (as has many members of her family).

    I guess sanity all depends on the individual.

    By the way--I love the look of Aragorn. Do you know if they are
    set up for transporting semen?

    yes.....they do transport semen for Aragorn and this stud service
    is for sale for $800 if we don't find a broodmare fast!
211.8All good things come to an end...PMRV70::MACONETue Mar 17 1987 15:326
    I just found out that "Aragorn" died of old age. The owner found
    him dead in his paddock....apparently a heart attack.

    Poor old guy....such a nice horse.

211.9waiting too long...CSC32::M_HOEPNERTue Mar 17 1987 16:167
    Really sorry to hear that. I guess I waited too long on that
    one.

    Last year another stallion I would like to have bred to died--Clavier
    (he was standing in Maryland and had sired hunters and eventers).
