    For good quality hay, try Top O' Hill Farm in Groton (don't have
    the # with me), Erickson Grain Mill in Acton, or David Sears in
    Pepperell....all deliver Canadian or New York hay.  It runs $150
    to $165 a ton (about 30 bales).  I use David Sears but you have
    to beat on him to get him to deliver.

        Even with the drought, you can still get decent quality
        hay in North Carolina for 70 - 100 dollars a ton.

	I guess it just now dawned on me that the cost of maintaining

    	While I can't help you look for hay Amanda, maybe someone else
    	is in the same boat in New Hampshire...
    
    	A good place to use is: BATTLES FARMS in Bradford.  They have
    	super hay (1st, 2nd & 3rd crops) in wire bales that weigh about
    	75 to 80lbs.  They guarantee their hay too... something I
    	personally never came across.
    
    	They deliver to a wide area weekly, or you can pick up at their
    	farm.  They have hay year 'round too.  They delivered lots down
    	south and are still doing that too.
    
    	They also have Bagged shavings ($2.75 delivered), baled straw,
    	bagged & bulk whole and crimped oats and corn.

    This my not be of immediate help but we get our hay out of
    New York State...John Gavaletz.  It comes down in about
    12 ton loads...about 100 to 110/ton.  He will deliver partial
    loads...an opportunity for a number of people to get together
    in an area.

    We have been happy with his hay...what we request is mostly
    timothy with a little alfalfa/clover.  However, I know he has
    access to other mixtures.
    The one thing with John is if I don't like what he delivers he
    will take it back.

    I recently bought 60 bales from UCF in Lancaster (until recently
    it was Lancaster Feed and Grain) for $180.  They also delivered.
    
    Their number is 365-2194.  I have been very satisfied with it.

    I'm new to horses, we just got three ponies a couple of weeks
    ago, and I'm looking for a good deal on supplies (specifically,
    hay, grain, and shavings).

    While we were out looking for ponies, I asked around about the prices
    of supplies, and found some people that buy hay for around $1.50/bale,
    and 100lb bags of grain for around $10.  Our local grain store charges
    about twice those prices.  The guy that quoted these costs is too
    far away to even ask about his sources.  What is a reasonable
    price for this stuff?

    Any ideas locally?  I live in Lancaster, and work in Northboro,
    so anywhere in that general area would be good.      

    Also, on shavings, I know a sawmill would be a good source, but
    I don't know of any mills nearby.  Any recommendations?

    I think there is an Agway dealer and a Farm Bureau feedstore out
    in your area. Both places are good sources to by from. The Farm
    Bureau provides mostly their own grain, I've used it for the
    past few years switching from both Blue Seal and Purina. Not only
    was the cost substantially lower, I found the nutrients to be higher.
    I don't know anything about Agway products.  Shavings from a mill 
    are your best bet for cost, a bag of shavings from a feedstore may 
    run anywhere from 2.75 - 4.00. Hay from the locals would run between
    2.50 - 4.00 per bale.

    We live and board our horses in Harvard so we're almost neighbors!
    
    The MOST expensive place (from our experience) is the Farm Bureau
    (UCF) Store in Groton.  Hay, grain, and shavings are usually $3
    -$5 more than anywhere else.  Usually we buy grain and shavings
    from Eriksons (263-4733) in Acton.  The place isn't the most organized
    place I've ever seen but the prices are good and they operate on
    what I'd refer to as a "hand-shake".  We just call and tell them
    what we want, when, and where... it shows up and we stop by the
    store when we get a chance to pay the bill.  They don't hassle you
    about it.  You just do it when you get around to it.  They will
    even put the hay or shavings up into the loft and stack them (neatly)
    for you if you ask them to - at no extra charge.  
    
    Right now we are waiting for hay from The Top-Of-The-Hill-Farm in
    Ayer.  I'm not sure of the phone number but I can get it for you
    later if you want.  They charge $175.00 for 1 ton of hay.  That's
    about 30 bales.  They have a reputation for quality hay.  It's a
    family run business (like Eriksons) and they too are very nice to
    deal with.

    Hi Cheryl, I used to go thru Eriksons also, I switched to UCF
    products for being less expensive, but I know the prices they
    command for Purina and Blue seal were alot higher than Eriksons.
    The shavings I noticed being higher also.  We get our hay from
    Top of the Hill farm, I think its exceptional quality, we haven't
    had a bad bale yet.

    I grew up in Leominster and now live in Westminster so know
    a few of the places around the area.  Farmer's Exchange in
    Leominster Mass. is pretty reasonable on most of their feed
    and supplies.  UCF in Fitchburg is good too, except I prefer
    to feed Blueseal.  I deal with Horse and Buggy in Winchendon,
    another Blueseal dealer, but they may be too far from you.
    
    As for woodshops for shavings, Javanpar's Lumber in Westminster
    sells sawdust for $16 a load.  That can be a pickup load or
    a dumptruck load is the bigger the vehicle, the more you get
    for the same price.
    
    I can buy farm hay for $2.00 a bale $1.50 if I pick it up but
    I find the bales don't weigh much and I actually end up paying
    more in the longrun.  I pay 3.25 for feedstore hay which is
    almost Canadian quality and it lasts twice as long.  I actually
    can feed more of it for less money because the bales weigh
    3 times more.                                             
    
    

    We too deal with the Farmers' Exchange in Leominster...found them
    to be the best on price.  Again we use Blue Seal bran, trotter pellets
    and crimped oats.
    
    As far as the hay goes, if you can find someone who gets a "large"
    load from Canada or wherever that is quality you may want to split
    with them.  We get ours out of New York for $115 a Ton but it is
    in 13 Ton loads.  However, there are others who do the same and
    split the load as many as 4 times.
    
    We can't really help with the shavings as we get them delivered
    in bulk.

    We also get our grain from UCF in Groton.  Granted their UCF brand
    is less expensive that Purina but I did find their overall prices
    for grain to be lower than Erikson's.  Their shavings are the same
    price as Erikson's, $3.00 per bag.  We just switched to sawdust. We
    get it from Parlee's Lumber in Littleton (508) 486-4681/8706 and
    they do deliver. For a 10 wheel dumptruck load (I believe it's a
    4 cord load) the price was $125. They also have prices if you pick
    up by either pickup or bag it yourself, though I don't remember the
    prices.
    
    Depending on the season, grain prices will fluctuate as will hay
    prices.  You may want to check the Want Advertiser, Yankee Pedlar,
    etc. for local farmers who are selling.  Try to find other people
    to go in on hay, too.  Better prices for quantity purchases.

       I board my horse in Phillipston and remember what the last winter
    was like with getting shavings. The people who own the stable had the
    hardest time getting shavings and would have to resort to bagged
    shavings. Needless to say, since that's quite expensive, Jasper's stall
    only got new shavings 1x - 2x a week. 
    Concerning Javanpar's Lumber in Westminster, do they still cut lumber
    in the winter and sell the shavings? That was the problem with our 
    supply since the stable would buy shavings from local lumber yards
    which would close down for the winter (TOO COLD!).
    
    Does anyone know of lumber yards around the Gardner/Athol area that
    sell shavings all year long?

    	I'm looking for a few names of grain stores and lumber yards
    	that I can get grain & shavings and hay from. I live in salem NH
    	so something with in that area would be great. I'm willing
    	to drive up to an hour.  All I know of is Dodge Grain and Feuer
    	lumber to purchase these things at and I was wondering what
    	prices are like else where.  I beleave dodge grain charges $12.00
    	for charger and $15.00 for trotter.  Shavings are $3.40 a bag
    	(Small bag) and $4.00 for a (large) bale of hay.  I haven't
    	had a horse for about 3 and half years and gods nows these prices
    	are much higher than I remember so I was just wondering if these

    For grain, the Blue Seal store in Derry, NH is about as good on
    prices as any.  They even have a drive through pick up area.
    
    For hay and straw, go to J&F Farms on Route 102 east of Derry. 
    They have been bringing hay and straw down from Canada for about
    40 years and usually have good quality.  It pays to be able to buy
    at least 1-2 tons at a time, if you have the storage space.  they
    will deliver 1-2 tons or more at a time.
    
    For lumber, if you do not mind green, rough-cut pine, go to Paris
    Lumber on Fremont Road in Chester, NH.  The Paris' produce real
    nice and even cuts of rough-cut pine and are very inexpensive. 
    We have built two garages, a barn, and a cabin in Maine with the
    pine from Paris Lumber.

    Here's another vote for J & F Farms.  We used to live in Peterborough,
    NH and they would deliver hay to us (we'd get enough for the whole
    year at once) plus load it into our loft at no extra cost.  They
    also had bagged shavings, but I don't know if they do any more.
    They would also deliver those if you bought enough.
    
    We stopped using bagged shavings when one of our horses got heaves
    and started using sawdust which is not as dry and dusty as shavings.
    We used to get truckloads of sawdust from Bingham Lumber in Brookline,
    NH.  They would deliver and unload the sawdust and we'd cover it
    with black plastic so it wouldn't get wet from the weather.  It
    was a lot cheaper than shavings if you have a spot to store it.
    You'd have to call for prices since it's been well over a year since
    I bought any from them.  We used to always buy our sawdust in the
    summer since they always had plenty.  It would get a bit scarce
    in the winter.

    Shavings are usually taken from dried wood and you usually get some
    of them broken up in the bagged shavings which causes some of the
    dust.
    
    Sawdust is from the wood as it is cut and is generally moist.  We
    get pine sawdust (sometimes have used hemlock).
    
    One of our foals was developing contracted heels and her hooves
    were extremely hard.  Our shoer suggested that we stopped using
    bagged shavings and switch to sawdust to keep some moisture in her
    hooves and make them a bit softer.  We would wet down the shavings
    until we got the sawdust (this also helped with another horse that
    had heaves).  Luckily our foal's feet came out fine.
    
    You need to be careful about sawdust (and maybe even shavings) since
    sometimes the lumber yard will be sawing hardwood, some of which
    can cause sickness and death in horses.  We used some oak sawdust
    at one time - no reactions, but it was dustier than the pine sawdust.
    Black walnut is deadly and should absolutely be avoided.

	FYI ...

	JNL Sawdust in Winchendon sells bulk shavings.  I called last
week for prices and they have an 18 cord truck with blower - $650 (can 
deliver 1/2 load for $325).  They also have a larger truck - but I didn't
get those prices.  He mentioned something about these being winter prices
and it would be slightly lower in summer.  He also mentioned that he is
booked for deliveries until March or April.  I'll post thier number if
anyone wants it.

     throw their shaving away. We get ours from the Waltham High School...

    You could try Petes Grain in Dracut. Not sure how good they are
    about taking new customers on for Shavings though. They *Promise*

    	It is Tim/clover mix and nice, clean bales.  His price was really
    	good too - I paid only $2.85 a bale and I usually have to pay
    	at LEAST $3.50.  This really helped my wallet this year.
    
    	He stands by his hay - if you have anything you don't like
    	just call him and he will come up and replace.  He says he
    	stands by his word.

    Every year I face the same problem...Where can I get +or- 5 tons
    of decent quality hay.  Last year I got 5 tons from the same fellow
    but 2 tons were good and 3 were just o.k.  Also, the bales were on the
    small side.  Does any one have a hayman who has consistent quality
    without being $5.50 or $6.00 a bale (even at 5 ton quantities)?
    I refuse to feed my horses marsh grass for 3.50 a bale.
    Does any one have this problem?  And can any one solve it?

    Top of the Hill Farm on the Groton/Ayer line sells excellant quality
    hay though it is expensive, $160/ton.  We buy 24 ton a year at a 
    cheaper price than that though.  In the 4 or 5 years we've been 
    buying hay from them we've never gotten a bad load.  They are the
    big bales too, probably around 65-70 pounds.

    J AND F FARMS in Derry N.H. sells excellent Canadian hay around
    150/ton. Sorry i dont have the number handy, but they always have
    plenty of good hay. I have been getting it there for about 5 yrs.
    Only had one problem with about 5 bad bales, I put them aside and 
    he replaced them the next time he came around!
    
    

    J and F Farms also puts up their own hay (at least one of the sons used
    to do it, don't know if that's still the case).  If they still do it,
    it's cheaper than the Canadian hay.  We got their hay for many years
    when we lived in NH and never had a problem with it.  We got the
    Canadian hay the first year, but switched to their own hay since it was
    cheaper.  They are really nice people to deal with.

    Feresteins (sp) in Foxboro MA sells good quality 50 lb & up
    bales of Canadian timothy hay.
    I don't know what the current price is, it varies according to
    the time of year.  I cannot use local hay, it's too rich (high
    alfalfa) and gives my horse the runs.

    I had the Canadian Hay at J&F tested and it contains all of the
    minerals needed for healthy horses at 7% protein (which is to be
    expected nowadays for Timothy mixes). You can get forage tested
    at Rochester Equine Clinic for $40.00.

    FYI, most feed reps can test hay at a fraction of the cost of a vet
    lab..ie Blue Seal I believe charges under $12.00, and at that it might
    be for an elaborate test, just protein and basic analysis might be 
    free of charge..its worth a call.

    basis to Douglas (w/ out charging an arm and a leg)?  We are 
    interested in the loose stuff, not bagged.
    
    I know of several places in the Hopkington/Upton area where I could

    Get your shavings now! I buy bagged shavings for $3.50 a bale. I
    planned on getting enough for the winter soon. When I called about
    a discount from Agway in Northboro (MA) they just went up to $4.50
    a bale, in one week! They said there would be a shortage this year
    (the housing lag I guess, not as much lumber being planed). 
    Well agway in Gardner still has it for $3.50 a bale and gave me a 
    discount also (over 15 bales- $3.20) but when they get their next 
    shipment I'm sure the price will jump.

    No, Top o the Hill doesn't supply grain, they have hay and shavings.
    Their hay is expensive, but you get what you pay for, and we've
    always gotten top quality hay from them.  They deliver also.

I ask again.  How much is the hay?  What constitutes expensive?  Is the quality
up there with the Canadian hay?

    It all depends on what quality you buy.  They sell by the ton and get
    some out of NY, and also hay local fields.  If you are that interested,
    call them and ask!!

    When we were in NH, we got all our hay from J&F Farms in Chester NH.
    They delivered Canadian or good quality local hay. They also delivered
    bagged shavings. I'm sure they delivered in MA too. Their prices were
    quite reasonable considering the quality. I don't have their phone
    number with me but I'm sure I've got it at home. I don't want to even
    guess their current prices because it's been 4 years since I bought any
    hay from them.
    
    When we moved west, I found that the cheapest hay here in WA that I would 
    feed to our horses was $35 more per ton than I was paying J&F! To get
    top quality timothy around here, you have to pay $170 per ton plus a
    delivery charge. That's why so many people out here feed straight
    alfalfa eeven though straigh alfalfa is not recommended for horses. 
    It's so much cheaper than grass hay.

    I need to scrounge up about 2 tons of horse quality Timothy
    hay that isn't priced at $200+ a ton!  Anyone have any leads

    Try Ericson's in Acton.  They get Canadian hay, good quality,
    not quite $200 a ton but not cheap.
    
    Also, try the UCF in Littleton.  I don't know what their situation is
    but they get Canadian also.

    Good news!  MA Farmers are haying fields now!!!!

    Tell me about it!!  We picked up 1000 bales last night, and have

    And my hay is *ready* to be cut, but the guy who does it says it will

    Looking for good horse quality hay for my feed store.  Doesn't

    looking horse hay!  I would pick-up, and pay cash, if necessary...
    I can handle about 60-75 bales at a time.

    How much do you get for shavings,.. We are having a hard time
    getting bagged shavings for under 4.00.

    Donna, there is a guy based in Weare NH who delivers shavings for 2.50
    per bale, I cant think of his name off hand, my friend arranges to have
    them delivered to her barn and I in turn buy them from her as I dont
    have much storage room for them. He's very reliable though, Ill see if
    I can get his name and # from her....dont know how far he delivers
    though, you are in Chelmsford, arent you? He's also considering getting
    into feeds, too, but does not do hay.
    

    There was a note in here a while back for Fred Gurney's shavings,
    posted by his daughter-in-law. I'll re-post the infor in case anyone is
    interested. Fred is out of Groton/Littleton and the number is 433-6985.
    He sells and delivers shavings and shredded paper in *very* large plastic
    bags, so you can store them outside under a tarp (I have them under my
    deck.) It's 3.50 a bag for shavings, 2.50 for paper.

    Hay in Hubbardston, MA - If anyone in Hubbardston area is interested in
    hay for a good price, I thought I'd spread the word.  The farmer made
    new fields several years ago with the help of the agricuture Dept.
    I know he takes excellent care of the fields and they look very nice. 
    He recently got his own equipment to cut and bale because he had
    problems with having others do it for him. I think the hay will be top
    notch, I've never seen any of it though, I already get mine from a
    close neighbor.  He's trying to get some first customers so I think
    that's why the price is so low, plus he has no storage.
    
    $1.75 if picked up in the field.

Does anyone know of a dealer selling hay in the greater Templeton/Phillipston
area? I live in Royalston (the middle of nowhere) and I can't find anyone with
hay.

Even if you know of someone who would deliverr to that area. I am almost at the
"$$ is no object" stage :-(.
