252.0. "PORKY PONIES" by MKFSA::STEVENS () Tue Sep 23 1986 17:47

     AFTER MONTHS OF PREPARATION I'M NOW THE PROUD OWNER OF A COUPLE
    OF CUTE OLD GUELDING PONIES, DUKE AND COLONEL. THIS IS MY FIRST
    TIME AS A HORSE/PONY OWNER AND I FEEL PRETTY CONFIDENT THAT I'LL
    BE ABLE TO TAKE GOOD CARE OF THESE OLD BOYS. I HAVE NOTICED,
    HOWEVER, THAT THESE PONIES HAVE QUITE THE APPETITE. IN FACT, IF
    I HAD A THIRD PONY, I COULD CALL THEM THE 3 LITTLE PIGS. THE
    THING THAT HAS ME WORRIED IS THAT THEY MAY BE EATING TOO MUCH.
    YOU SEE THEY BOTH HAVE QUITE THE BELLIES AS IT IS. I FENCED OFF
    AN AREA 50 FEET BY 100 FEET AND IN A COUPLE OF DAYS THEY'VE MANAGED
    TO CHEW DOWN ALL THE GRASS, (ESSPECIALLY THE CLOVER), PLUS ALL THE
    EXTRA CLUMPS OF HAY THAT I'VE GIVEN THEM. THEY AREN'T VERY ACTIVE
    BECAUSE I'M TO BIG TO BE RIDING THEM AND I CAN ONLY REALLY WALK
    THEM AROUND. ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ABOUT PROVIDING GOOD
    NUITRITION WITH LITTLE WEIGHT GAIN? ALSO, ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO
    EXCERCISE THESE GUYS WITHOUT HAVING TO CHASE THEM DOWN THE STREET?

                                               WHAT DO YOU THINK?

                                                          DAVE

	For the exercise, you could always teach them how to drive.
    (Maybe they already know!)

252.2cut down their grass timeWHOARU::NAJJARWed Sep 24 1986 10:2610
    Are the ponies getting grain? They don't need it if they are.
    If it is possible to turn them out in the grass paddock for
    only half a day, and put them in a dirt paddock for the rest
    of the day, that will cut down on the amount of grass they
    consume. In addition, just give them hay in the morning
    and at night (about 2 flakes/pony). If they know how to lunge
    you can lunge them for about 20 min a day (10 min ea direction).
    Driving is a good idea if you have the time and equipment.
    Do you know of any experienced kids in the neighborhood that
    you could trust to groom and exercise them for you?

    Maybe a little longeing would help, I have a 7 1/2 hand pony, who
    is too small to be ridden, so he gets longed (sp) a few times a
    week. He loves it, he thinks he's one of the big horses, he starts
    bucking and playing. As for feeding, ponies are pretty easy keepers,
    I give mine 1 can of pellets a day, and probably only because he's
    so cute! He's also a blimp! He maintains fine on hay and grass.

    THANKS FOR ALL THE SUGGESTIONS. I DON'T HAVE ANY EQUIPMENT FOR
    DRIVING BUT I DO HAVE A COUPLE OF NEIGHBORHOOD KIDS THAT ARE
    AROUND ON WEEKENDS FOR SOME EXERCISING. WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHEN
    YOU SAY, LONGEING? IS THAT SOMETHING THAT'S EASY TO DO?

                                                    THANKS,
                                                              DAVE
252.5summary on longingWHOARU::NAJJARWed Sep 24 1986 15:1316
    longing equipment consists of:
    a longe line (looks like a very long lead line)
    a longe whip (about 4 1/2' long with same length thong)
    all tack shops carry them (not very expensive)

    the idea: you stand in the center of a 20 meter circle, and
    the longe line is attached to the ring of the halter. The
    pony walks, trots or canters on the circle around you. You
    use the whip (crack it) to encourage the pony forward, you never
    hit them with it. The line from the pony's halter to your hand
    and the whip in your other hand pointing toward the pony's
    rear end should form a V. The pony goes from halt to walk to
    trot & canter (and back down) from voice commands. There
    are many magazine articles or books on the subject, and most
    likely the ponies already know how. You might ask the person
    you got them from if the ponies know how to longe.
252.6DOG AND PONY SHOWMKFSA::STEVENSThu Sep 25 1986 09:4212
    THANKS FOR THE INFO ON LONGING. I MAY GIVE THAT A TRY. IT'S
    FUNNY THOUGH WHEN I GOT HOME YESTERDAY I SAW THAT THE PONIES
    ARE GETTING SOME EXERCISE. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH NATURE HAS TAKEN
    IT'S COURSE AND OUR DOG IS MAKING SURE THE PONIES DON'T JUST
    HANG OUT AND EAT. THE DOG CHASES THE PONIES AROUND AND THEN WHEN
    THE PONIES FINALLY FIGURE OUT, HEY I'M BIGGER THAN THAT DOG, THEY
    TURN AROUND AND CHASE THE DOG. THE DOG DOESN'T BITE SO I'M NOT
    CONCERNED ABOUT THAT. ACTUALLY THE PONIES ARE THE ONES THAT WILL
    BITE IF THEY EVER CATCH THE DOG. I'LL HAVE TO SEE IF THIS DOG AND
    PONY SHOW HELPS THOSE BIG BELLIES TRIM DOWN.
                                                   SEE YA,
                                                           DAVE
