| Ann, I sympathize with you, that is a hard age to do much with.
You might consider bringing in a saddle and bridle and showing
them the parts. Do they all ride? Maybe bring in different
types of grooming equip. and explaining what each does (ie. a
hard and soft brush, curry comb, hoof pick, mane comb - don't
use the hard brush on the face or legs) things like that. I
think at that age it's helpful to have something visual.

Ann- Just another thought, how about bringing color pictures
of horses and teaching them different coat colors, pinto
appy, palomino, bay etc, then even quiz them again
by holding up the pictures and asking them to tell you
what the color is. What might be good is to have two
different pictures for each color, and use the second
set for the quiz.

| Ann, if you get to choose the topic, how about mentioning experiences
that you have had while judging shows and how (since one of the
main concerns of 4-H is safety) some things could be better/wrose
due to safety? I am very active in 4-H here in Middlesex County
(MASS) and one thing that we try to stress is how important it is
to be safety-conscious when working around/exhibiting/etc. the horse.
Another topic that they would probably love to hear about is how
you got interested in judging, what type(s) of judgin you do, and
how you went about getting your judges license (requirements, etc).
Kids like to hear about these types of things too!
Good luck giving your speech! I am sure it will be a good one!

| Hi Ann, with diagrams and the such you could always teach the different
parts of the horse. That was one of the first things we had to
learn in Pony Club, and I was about 9 years old then.
Just an idea... - jenny -

| Ann, did you give your talk yet? How did it go, and what
did you decide to talk about?

| Nope, didn't give the talk yet...I've yet to hear what date will
be considered confirmed.
I've decided to speak on judging. What it takes to become a judge,
what will help catch and hold a judge's eye, what can be done to
improve your performance in the eyes of the judge versus what you
may think your performance really is. After this past weekend I'm
going to throw in a little about what to do if you fall, feel ill,
etc. I've found that kids are hesitant to ask to be dismissed when
they really don't feel good.
I'll keep you posted on the results!

| Well, I gave my speach last week. I think it went well. I basically
gave just a short blurb about judging, things I don't like/like,
and then moved on to an open forum type situation. The discussion
was great! The kids asked super questions and were full of them.
They're a great group of kids.
